Begging for Therapy
My name is Loretta Collins Begg, and I live right outside Washington, D.C., in Maryland. After a 25-year career in sales, I decided to return to school. I got my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and became a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCPC). My theoretical orientation is a mix of cognitive-behavioral and person-centered therapy. I specialize in mood disorders, anxiety, PTSD, and substance abuse.
I started my career as a therapist working with people suffering with substance use disorders and discovered that psychological disorders tend to follow the same developmental trajectory.
I suffer with depression, but it was not addressed until I was 19. One of the reasons I became a counselor was to stop the stigma of psychological health. Until we start treating brain diseases on the same level as medical problems, psychological health will continue to be considered in a “less than” manner.
