Benjamin Cheney M.D.

My practice draws on a variety of different experiences. Drawing on my training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, I work collaboratively with patients, in which we try to pick up on patterns from their conscious and unconscious thoughts and think about how early life events may be influencing the present. The idea behind this approach is that as people understand more about how their mind works, they will be able to think more effectively and make better choices. As a psychiatrist, I prescribe medication in certain cases, particularly for those who have difficulties with their mood, anxiety, and concentration. Often, medication combined with psychotherapy can produce optimal results. I also have training in the treatment of substance abuse disorders and work with people who are questioning their substance use, as well as those who feel they have a problem. In particular with substance using patients, I believe that frequent sessions, in combination with group and other forms of treatment, form the best framework for success and recovery. I am also a licensed prescriber of buprenorphine (also known as Suboxone or Zubsolv), which can be a helpful medication for people with opiate problems.

Dr. Cheney is both very understanding and very pragmatic. He focuses on workable solutions and ways to see yourself in a better light. I’ve seen him for years and find him personable, intelligent and straightforward.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Cheney over the last 7 years. As life presents you challenges, he’s always been there to help me. I first went to see him when I had issues with my job, marriage and finances. Along the way he’s helped me with my anxiety, depression and any other things that we uncovered during our sessions. If you want someone who is patient, knowledgeable and genuinely cares, he is the one for you.
