My Approach
Informed by an optimistic belief in people's resiliency and ability to change and grow, I view therapy as an opportunity for transformation. I work with motivated clients who are ready to take a serious look at their lives' direction and are open to change—those who are eager to improve their self-esteem, relationships, intimacy, sexuality, and career satisfaction.
My work in counseling psychology evolved from my background as an artist. While earning my BFA at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, I was invited into my colleagues' lives and learned to share their experiences through their lenses and perceptions. Graduate training at NYU sharpened this insight, bringing a unique perspective to the therapeutic process.
I provide feedback and reflection—infused with a dose of humor—in a warm, safe, and trusting atmosphere. My approach is both interactive and direct. I ask my clients to challenge themselves to be completely open and honest and share in a way that might feel like they're 'telling on themselves'. Significant change and healing can only really begin with the full truth.
I strongly believe that integrating the mind and body leads to greater mental health. Therefore, I encourage clients to incorporate physical activity and other treatment modalities (e.g., yoga, art, working out, running, massage, emotional support animals, acupuncture, meditation, medication, vacation, etc.) in addition to traditional talk therapy.
My warm, open-minded, and non-judgmental style cultivates a process that is both inviting and challenging. We'll explore and confront the cognitive and behavioral blocks in your daily life, as well as past events that continue to hold you back. Because no two individuals are the same, our treatment plan will be tailored to reflect your goals. Together we work to increase self-acceptance, provide greater clarity, build a more authentic sense of self, and healthier relationships.
ABOUT ME
I provide individual and couples psychotherapy via Zoom for adults and college-age students in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
I’ve been a licensed psychotherapist in practice for more than 20 years. My niche is working with both LGBTQ+ and straight individuals and couples, persons in polyamorous relationships, BDSM and fetish communities, visual and performing artists (professionals, as well as students from prestigious Boston institutions as Boston Conservatory/Berklee, New England Conservatory, and Emerson College), and traditional and holistic medical providers.
Additionally, I’m well-versed and experienced working with sex workers, providers, escorts, and adult film entertainers, both gay and straight. I provide a safe and open space to discuss and process related issues that most feel unavailable to explore without judgment.
My area of expertise is helping clients with difficulties in relationships. Such difficulties include finding and sustaining healthy intimacy, healing from a painful break-up or divorce, recovering from major loss, and growing up in difficult circumstances. I am particularly suited to those who spend a great deal of time in their head, feel disconnected from their feelings, and would now like to develop a greater awareness of their emotional world.

Some of the best therapy experiences I’ve ever had! Brett is warm, engaging, and incredibly insightful. He helped me uncover some underlying issues and gave me practical strategies that have genuinely improved my day to day life. Brett is compassionate, perceptive, patient, and helpful. He’s really been a partner on transforming my journey to understand my place in the world.

I can’t recommend Brett highly enough! From the moment I stepped into the office, the atmosphere was calm and welcoming. He took the time to really listen, asked thoughtful follow-up questions, and tailored his approach to my concerns. I always leave feeling understood and empowered to move forward, even though I have trouble trusting people with my emotions. He is able to help me deal with those emotions so well. I’m so thankful I found Brett <3

Mr. Terrien is a great therapist. I have seen him on and off for few years now and he as been tremendously helpful in terms of helping me navigate through a few major life transitions. I always know he has my back and is genuinely rooting for me. He is a kind, patient listener and allows me the space to talk through whatever is on my mind.

Brett is a delight, he’s a wealth of sound, reliable counsel to me. Wherever I am on the map of mood-disorderedness, he’s usually able to navigate me to some kind of safe passage. He’s receptive and accommodating with a gentle finesse that serves to pacify and course-correct rather than to condemn or enable. He’s a splendid listener, he’s dedicated, he’s reliable, and he’s never let me down.
