Counseling Works NYC / Sabrina Tropper

Hi there! I’m Sabrina, the founder of Counseling Works NYC. I run a small private practice in NYC, and I work with adolescents, ages 13+, to adults of all ages. I have worked with a range of different conditions from general self-esteem issues to trauma. My basic philosophy as a therapist is that it almost doesn’t matter what you’ve been through or where you come from. If you can learn to get comfortable in your own skin, then things will fall into place. There’s a way to be confident and self-assured without being a jerk. Maybe you haven’t seen many examples of this, or just find it hard to strike a balance between saying ‘no’ and being compassionate. As a result, you’re left with feelings of resentment, guilt, anxiety, self-blame and the cycle just repeats itself over and over. The truth is it doesn’t have to be that hard. Self-Acceptance is not equivalent to being self-centered, selfish, or being a “bad person.” There is a way to strike a good balance between being too passive or too aggressive, and it doesn’t involve changing who you fundamentally are. It starts with accepting yourself, learning how to stand up for yourself (or others), and then crafting a life that matches you. Working Together Our work together will involve a conversation that happens once per week (more or less), where we’ll be thinking through things that are keeping you stuck and figuring out how to get you unstuck. I take a holistic approach to therapy and incorporate a lot of mindfulness into my work. I am also trained in EMDR, a trauma-focused therapy, and use techniques from it with most of my clients. I was seeking an EMDR therapist and Sabrina seemed to fit the bill. We had our intake over the phone, and prior to, she was consistent with making sure we had our appointment and was open to questions. The intake process with her was thoroughly enjoyable; she made me feel at ease right away and I could feel her genuineness and kindness throughout!
