David Cowen, Ph.D.
One of the hardest parts of starting therapy is reaching out and opening up to someone you don’t yet know. I aim to make that first step easier by offering a thoughtful, non-judgmental space where you can begin to talk honestly about what’s not working and what feels unsettled.
I am a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist with many years of experience working with adolescents and adults. Before entering full-time private practice in Manhattan, I worked in a range of settings, including Ascent, a long-established wilderness therapy program for young adults in the Selkirk Mountains of northern Idaho, and with college and graduate students at the University of Hawaii. Those experiences shaped my belief that meaningful change comes from understanding oneself more deeply, not from quick fixes.
Many of the people I work with feel blocked or dissatisfied as they navigate a life transition. On the outside, things may appear fine, yet internally something doesn’t feel settled. Anxiety, restlessness, disrupted sleep, or a sense of being stuck often bring people to therapy, especially when these concerns haven’t responded to reassurance or surface-level solutions.
My approach is psychodynamic and exploratory. While I draw from a range of contemporary treatment techniques, my work is grounded in helping people understand the deeper patterns shaping how they think, relate, and make choices. The goal is not cheerleading or symptom management alone, but insight that leads to genuine, lasting change in how a person feels and lives.
Therapy with me is collaborative, honest, and paced. We don’t rush toward conclusions or impose a narrative about who you should be. Instead, we take the time to understand what’s actually happening beneath the surface, and how your past continues to influence your present, so that change can emerge in a way that feels real and sustainable.
I tend to work best with individuals who are reflective, curious about themselves, and interested in meaningful psychological work. Over time, this process can help reduce anxiety, increase clarity, and create a stronger sense of internal stability — not just temporarily, but in a way that lasts.
Please contact your insurance company before scheduling. You first want to find out directly from them what you are financially responsible for. It is usually $20-$40 per session if you have a co-pay, but can be much more if you must first meet a deductible. If asked, the CPT (Precedure) code is '90834'.

This review comes after my initial session with Dr Cowen. He was friendly, professional, and welcoming. I had not seen a mental health professional before so I was not sure what to expect, but he walked me through how things would go and what I should be thinking about and focusing on while we met. It was a great first experience.

A good friend suggested I speak with Dr. Cowen following a significant loss.
I had been in therapy once before and found the experience somewhat underwhelming.
Dr. Cowen's approach was much different than I expected. He gave clear,
direct feedback about what he observed in the moment and over time
I was able to reengage and enjoy my life in ways I never expected. He was intuitive,
very bright and had a gentle demeanor. I have given two friends his contact
information and their experiences were similar to mine.
