Dr. Lawrence Wong Psychotherapy
Many people I work with have been genuinely hurt. By their past, by the people who were supposed to care for them, or by a life that has not gone the way they hoped. The last thing they need is someone telling them what they ought to do. What actually helps is having someone who can hold all of that pain with them and help them find their way through. Whatever brought you here, my commitment is to help you discover that things can actually be different. If you are in pain and suffering, here is what I offer. Hope that things can be different. Strength you forgot you carried. And a life driven by the values that make it worth living.
In our work together I draw from approaches that explore both the deeper patterns shaping your struggles and the practical tools that help you manage them day to day. I believe lasting change happens when insight and action come together, and when therapy balances compassion with gentle challenge. My approach is existentially grounded and psychodynamically informed, meaning I care about the whole of who you are, not just the symptom that brought you in. I also draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mentalization Based Therapy, tailoring everything specifically to you.
You are the expert on your own life. I come with years of training and a wide range of tools, but I know that not every approach works for every person. Together we will find what works for you. I will never push you faster than you are ready to go, but I will gently challenge you when I think it will help.
Before becoming a Clinical Psychologist I spent nearly a decade as a neuroscience researcher at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the Greater Los Angeles VA, studying brain development and how early experiences shape who we become. I earned my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited program at the California School of Professional Psychology and my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from UCLA. I have trained across community mental health agencies, university counseling centers, nonprofit organizations, and long term outpatient therapy with clients navigating trauma, personality disorders, grief, crisis, and neurodiversity across the lifespan. My research has been published in peer reviewed journals and presented at national conferences. I also speak Cantonese and conversational Mandarin and am deeply committed to working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
I work with children ages five and up, adolescents, and adults. I specialize in trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and neurodiversity including ASD and ADHD. I offer individual therapy, child and adolescent therapy, and in person group therapy in Hermosa Beach. Telehealth is available throughout California for those who prefer or require remote sessions. I offer a sliding scale fee and welcome clients who are working toward something better even when resources are limited.
Clients describe me as warm, accepting, and effective. I see myself as walking alongside you, not pushing or telling you who to be. If any of this resonates, I would love to connect.
