Dr Meredith McHugh, LCSW-C, MSW, PhD, CCPT

Therapy with me will provide a safe, warm, nonjudgmental, identity-affirming space where you will feel fully heard and understood. Within an anti-oppressive, trauma-centered framework we will explore how past and present experiences, and systems, have shaped the distress, anxiety, anger, or hopelessness you may be carrying. We will identify the ways you have adapted to these experiences and how this may be contributing to the stress/trauma held in your brain and body and carried into your relationships. I will support and challenge you to grow and heal from this. My background in psychology, neuroscience, and social work provides a rich perspective on the effects of trauma and stress on our brains, minds, and bodies. With this knowledge, I have worked extensively with youth and adult survivors of significant trauma, and those suffering through anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship issues, and psychosis. My approach to therapy draws heavily from internal family systems therapy (parts work), attachment theory, somatic psychotherapy, CBT, DBT, neuroscience and mindfulness. Central to my work is an understanding that trauma and stress are experienced within and from oppressive systems; and carried intergenerationally in our minds and bodies.

Meredith is an amazing professional and a wonderful and dedicated partner in working towards not just stability, but an intuitive and uhh somatic understanding of how best to ride one's own head, both in the times that ride is especially bumpy and also when it's perhaps deceptively smooth. I'm so grateful to have found her and to have had her support through some very difficult times and to have learned from her in many ways.

Meredith and I have been consistently working together for many years now, our focus mostly being on c-ptsd symptoms and anxiety through an IFS framework. She's always been such a lovely and compassionate therapist throughout my journey. Can't recommend her enough!

I honestly can't say enough about the quality of care I've received as Meredith's client. She's been very flexible with my extremely fluid work schedule, which has been a huge help. I love that she has a background in neuroscience, which gives her a fuller understanding of why people suffer with mental illnesses and an actual plan of how to move forward. It's very goal-oriented. Her use of Internal Family Systems is fascinating. She basically takes you on a tour of your own mind and teaches you how to relate to various parts held within it. You can learn to both regulate and even heal parts of your psyche. Most importantly, Meredith is a very compassionate, genuine and principled person. You can put your trust in her and absolutely benefit from her care. Highest recommendation!

Dr. McHugh has been my therapist for the past couple of years, and she's honestly one of the best. Extremely comforting and empathetic. She usually knows exactly what to say or ask if you're feeling stuck during a session, but also gives you time if you're just trying to process. Sometimes talking to her, I forget I'm even a therapy session. And she definitely makes you feel seen!

Meredith has been my therapist the last four years—and I’m not exaggerating when I say her care has been life changing. When we started our sessions, I struggled with intense anxiety and unresolved trauma from my past. Over time, Meredith taught me how to address these areas of concern with openness and curiosity. And it’s truly changed me for the better. She’s deeply knowledgeable, nonjudgmental, and (so!) funny. I look forward to our sessions every week because I know I’ll walk away feeling lighter and more centered than before. It’s a testament to her skill and support. I cannot recommend Meredith enough; it’s hard to put her impact into words. But if you’re in search of a therapist who will accept you as you are—and guide you on your path toward self-actualization—then look no further.
