Dr. Valerie Mukanga received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. Following her graduation, she completed a General Practice Residency program at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Mukanga was one of the evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. During that tragic time, various people from the DFW helped her back on her feet. Therefore, following the completion of her dental education, she purposely returned to the Dallas area to give back to the community that selflessly helped her during one of the toughest times of her life.
Growing up, Dr. Mukanga encountered dental disparities herself, in her family and in her community. Dental diseases can not only cause pain, low self-esteem, but in extreme cases, death. Sadly, Dr. Mukanga lost one of her dear uncles due to dental infection. This is one of the reasons why she is determined to fight against dental diseases and have a positive impact on people’s dental health. Prior to pursuing her education as a dentist, Dr. Mukanga established Healing Wings Inc, a nonprofit organization that was based in Dallas, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of proper oral hygiene. For Dr. Mukanga, dentistry is not an option. It is a mission.
Born in Brussels, Belgium, raised in Africa and having lived more than half of her life in the United States, Dr. Mukanga is well equipped to providing care to people of various backgrounds. She speaks English and French fluently and has some working knowledge of Spanish. Her belief is that language or culture differences are no barrier to people because a caring heart speaks louder than words.

I went for fillings. The dentist was INCREDIBLY ROUGH ON MY TEETH AND DID NOT LISTEN TO ME!!
I kept begging ava owing hey know she's hurting me! And I kept begging for the assistant to suction the saliva. Either she couldn't see the in the back of my throat or she just didn't care!
No matter how I tried to espress to both the dentist and the assistant, NEITHER ONE OF THEM LISTENED!!
I will NEVER go back to this place again!!
The filling was not done right AT ALL! My teeth are hurting now, as if it wasn't filled properly. She didn't use the proper tools to "set" the fill after putting the matter in the open space.
She kept poking in my tooth as if that would've helped?? That shouldn't be.
AGAIN DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!!!!

I just got my first tooth pulled at Healing Wings and the experience was fast, and I did not feel a thing. Im telling you who ever reads this that Dr. Valerie used the tools with true skill and precision. Also, most dentists wanted a fortune to extract those or told me I needed a specialist, the price was very manageable with insurance also. Thank you all everyone at Healing Wings Dental.

The whole staff was kind, friendly, and informative. I get very anxious as the dentist, and each person on staff explained what they were doing before and while they did it so there were no surprises.
I was slightly uncomfortable when I arrived and saw quite a bit of bible verse decor on the walls. I’m not religious, and I wasn’t sure if I’d be made uncomfortable, however no one mentioned religion to me and I was fully comfortable with the staff.

She is a wonderful dentist that's also patient with her staff. I really need to have a dentist that makes me feel comfortable and she (plus her office manager/assistant) make me feel like that. Although she is a distance from where I stay, I do not mind in the least to visit her office for anything I need. She's knowledgeable and super nice. I had to get a traditional root canal but I knew of a more thorough method (called gentle wave) and she said I taught her something new! 9/10.

I feel very anxious about going to the dentist. However, going to Dr. Valerie's office gave me hope that there are still compassionate and empathetic dentists still out there! I specifically chose this office because the doctor is African American. I was pleasantly surprised to see a diverse treatment team along with the doctor and I would recommend going there.
