Jessen Mukalel, MD, is a spine, sports, and interventional pain specialist serving patients in and around The Woodlands, Texas. Practicing for over 10 years, Dr. Mukalel’s philosophy is simple. The Better doctor he can be the better your outcomes will be. Complete pain relief begins with meticulous diagnosing of pain generators. What is unique about Dr. Mukalel’s practice is his passion to educate patients about their pain conditions, empowering them to continue striving for 100% pain relief. Many patients seek him out after being told that there are no other options for their pain. His motto is, “I provide the options, you choose the relief.” No other doctor in the Greater Houston area provides such a diverse catalogue of pain-relieving therapies, because of his commitment to innovation and cutting edge solutions. If interventional therapies are ineffective, he offers physician direct infusion therapies such as Ketamine and Lidocaine, to tackle the most challenging of pain and depressive states. His mission is to help Houston achieve opioid-free pain therapy.
Dr. Mukalel completed his undergraduate degree in 2003 at the University of Debrecen Health and Science Center in Debrecen, Hungary. He then received his medical degree from Saint James School of Medicine in the Caribbean in 2006. Upon graduation, Dr. Mukalel completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He also completed an additional residency in anesthesia at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, in Chicago, Illinois. The first of his two pain fellowships were at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Acute Pain Management in 2010. He learned how to provide opioid-free pain management options for surgical patients and diagnose musculoskeletal and sports injuries using ultrasonography, which lead to Dr. Mukalel’s passion in training doctors on how to diagnose shoulder, knee, hip, feet, and hand injuries and treat with regenerative treatments like Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Aspiration Concentration (BMAC) Stem Cell therapy. The second pain fellowship was in Interventional Spine therapies at The Florida Spine Institute in Clearwater, Fl, specializing in chronic pain management.
Dr. Mukalel is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and board eligible in pain management. He has been published in several peer-reviewed journals for his research in advanced airway management, treatments for postherpetic neuralgia, interventional acute pain techniques, and Ketamine infusions for pain management. He is active in several pain societies, such as the American Society of Anesthesiologist, American Society of Regional Anesthesia, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, American Academy of Pain Management, American Interventional Headache Society, Pacific Spine and Pain Society, American Society of Pain and Neuroscience and The Texas Pain Society.
Since starting his first pain management practice in 2016, Dr. Mukalel has created a successful approach to treating chronic pain. This starts with diagnosing with temporary numbing injections, then treating with PRP, BMAC, Spinal Cord and peripheral nerve Stimulation, Nerve Ablation or rhizotomy, Sacral Fusion using LinQ, Spinal decompression with Vertiflex, spine fracture resolution with Kyphoplasty, Sonex Health’s Sx-Microknife for carpal tunnel syndrome or the Cutting Edge, Intracept Procedure, for vertebral body or discogenic pain. This has led to his recognition as a “Leading Physician of the World” in 2017 and 2018, Tampa Bay Magazine Top Doc Award in 2018, and The Woodlands, Texas, Interventional Pain Management Top Doc award 2020. He is on staff at St. Luke’s The Woodlands, as well as several other hospitals in the area. He is a consultant for Aetna Health plans, eradicating pill mills throughout Florida and Texas.

Dr Mukalel is a wonderful Doctor!!! I was anxious before my appointment.. I went to the office and his Staff was amazing!!! Then I saw Dr Mukalel and I walked out with a plan to help me with all my pain issues! I was calm!! I then looked at his reviews which I wish I had done before my appointment! These reviews were stating exactly how I felt! I am thankful I was referred to Dr Mukalel and I would tell anyone to go see him!!!

Dr Mukalel and his staff have helped me through out my journey of back pain. It wasnt until himself as well as his staff took the challenge of my care and recovery head on leaving me to only be concerned about healing. When I first saw Dr. Mukalel he told me he would get me out of pain and off pain pills. I thought yeah right. After seeing chiropractor, acupuncture, four other Drs, and in pain for six years no way he could do this. But I stuck with Dr mukalel and he proved me wrong. When I first went to him I was on 10/325 hydrocodone four times a day. Today I am happy to say I am down to 1 pill a day ( not every day) and feel so good. Thank you Dr. Mukaele for giving me a pain free life back. Your staff is also amazing. Always helpful and with a smile on there face. It's not just a job to them , it's a pleasure for them to work in your office and it shows in everything they do. I would refer my children, family, friends anytime to you. The staff always works with me on getting me in when needed because I travel. Dr Mukalel always takes the time to explain what is going on in my back and what it takes to fix it. His practice fights for me with insurance to get procedures done. We don’t always win but we can’t fix the insurance coverage. Worth getting to him to help fix your pain

Awesome Dr. when he realized something wasn’t right he ordered MRI where the found cyst on spinal cord. He got with my surgeon and I am now feeling great. Once I heal from this will be back to finish with neck issues. His office staff went above and beyond to get me in after work even if it meant they stayed late. I was originally referred to Dr. Mukalel by my podiatrist to help with a lower back issue. Right away he thought he knew what was going on and came up with a game plan. He didn’t rush through anything, took his time explaining each and every step of the plan and made sure I was comfortable with everything before moving forward. My issues are being addressed one at a time and I am no longer having pain in areas I have hurt in for years.
His office staff is also amazing. They are all to willing to help if I have questions or need anything and are very quick with responses. I have never had to wait more than 12 hours for anything, most times I have a response within a few hours. It is nice to go to a doctors office and deal with friendly, helpful people who just want to truly see you feel better.

I just love Dr. Mukalel and his nurses and staff!! They make you feel like you’re their family. Very kind, caring and affectionate. Dr. Mukalel will not stop until he finds the right solution for your pain, and also mental health issues. I’ve seen 2 pain doctors. They didn’t do much for me. I suffered for like over 2 years for relief. My podiatrist referred me to Dr. Mukalel. And it’s been a god send. I feel soooooo much better than I did, before seeing him.
