Jim Perabo, LMFT
This practice provides outpatient, individual psychotherapy for adults in Illinois. The focus is on structured, thoughtful work for people navigating stress, trauma, life transitions, and patterns that no longer fit the life they are living.
Many patients seek therapy during periods when something feels off but difficult to name—stress has accumulated, familiar coping strategies are no longer working, or a transition has disrupted stability. Often, patients arrive with insight already present but without a clear way to move forward. Therapy here is centered on helping patients clarify what is happening, understand how past experiences continue to shape present reactions, and make changes that are realistic and sustainable.
Sessions are collaborative, structured, and purposeful. From the start, the work focuses on identifying what feels most pressing, recognizing patterns that influence thoughts, emotions, and decisions, and determining where effort is best directed. The pace allows for reflection without getting stuck and for movement without rushing. The goal is change that holds up outside the therapy room, not quick fixes or surface strategies.
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, the practice takes a systemic perspective while working exclusively with individuals. This includes attention to relationships, work environments, family history, and broader life context. Viewing concerns within these systems often helps patients see situations more clearly, recognize their role within patterns, and make more intentional choices.
Treatment commonly addresses anxiety, trauma and PTSD, substance use concerns, and major life transitions. Clinical experience includes both individual and residential levels of care, with a strong trauma-informed foundation. Approaches may draw from narrative, cognitive, and depth-oriented perspectives, applied flexibly based on the needs of the individual rather than a one-size-fits-all model.
Initial sessions focus on understanding what brings a patient in now, what they would like to be different as a result of therapy, and what they have already tried. Expectations, boundaries, and goals are clarified early so the work remains focused and contained.
Services are provided via secure telehealth. Evening appointments are available. New patients are welcome.
