Laura Abreu
Hi, I'm Laura Abreu — Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), bilingual therapist (English/Spanish), and someone who genuinely believes that healing is possible, even when it doesn't feel that way right now.Since 2016, I've had the privilege of walking alongside women through some of life's most tender, complicated, and transformative moments — anxiety spirals, heartbreaking endings, the disorienting blur of new motherhood, and everything in between. People tell me they appreciate working with me because we don't just talk in circles: we get to the root of what's keeping you stuck, and we build a clear, actionable plan together. Many of my clients notice real shifts within the first few weeks.I practice virtually, which means you can access quality care from the comfort of your own home — no commute, no waiting room, no extra stress added to your already full plate.
Who I Work With
I specialize in working with millennial women navigating:
Anxiety — chronic worry, overthinking, perfectionism, panic, and the exhausting mental chatter that won't quiet down
Relationship issues — breakups and heartbreak, unhealthy relationship patterns, people-pleasing, rebuilding self-worth after a difficult relationship
Maternal mental health — fertility anxiety, pregnancy-related stress, postpartum depression and anxiety, the identity shift of becoming a mother
Life transitions — career changes, moves, loss, divorce, identity questions, and the feeling of being 'in between' versions of yourself
Self-esteem and identity — learning to trust yourself, quieting your inner critic, and building a relationship with yourself rooted in compassion
If you're a woman who feels like you're holding everything together on the outside while quietly falling apart on the inside — you've found the right space.
My Approach
I don't believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. Every woman who walks through my (virtual) door brings a unique story, set of experiences, and set of goals — and your treatment should reflect that.
I draw from a blend of evidence-based approaches, always tailored to you:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): We identify the thought patterns driving your anxiety and self-doubt, and we work to reshape them into something more accurate and empowering.
Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT): For clients who have experienced trauma, we process those experiences at a pace that feels safe — without re-traumatizing you.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Practical, skills-based tools for emotional regulation, tolerating distress, and showing up more effectively in your relationships.
Psychodynamic Theory: We explore how your past — your childhood, your family of origin, your earliest relationships — continues to shape the way you move through the world today.
Anti-Oppressive Practice: As a BIPOC therapist, I bring a social justice lens to our work. I understand the very real ways that systemic oppression, cultural dynamics, and immigrant family experiences can affect mental health.
Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C Certified): I am certified in perinatal mental health, meaning I have specialized training to support you through conception, pregnancy, and postpartum — every step of the motherhood journey.
After our first two to three sessions, I'll always work with you to build a structured treatment plan so you know exactly where we're headed. No vague, open-ended therapy that goes in circles — just clear goals, honest conversations, and real progress.
My Background
I grew up in New York City and attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Performing Arts — yes, the 'Fame' school. Before becoming a therapist, I was an actress, and that background has shaped the way I work more than you might expect. Deep listening, holding space for authentic expression, and truly entering someone else's experience are skills that live at the intersection of performance and therapy.
I went on to earn my Bachelor of Science in Psychology (with honors) from Baruch College, CUNY, and my Master of Social Work (MSW) from Hunter College, CUNY, where I trained in clinical practice with individuals, families, and groups.
My post-graduate experience includes community mental health settings and the New York City charter school system, where I worked with diverse populations across a wide range of presenting concerns.
I'm independently licensed as an LCSW in Florida, New Jersey, and Vermont — which means I can provide telehealth therapy to clients across all three states.
I've also traveled to over 30 countries. That experience has deepened my respect for the diversity of human experience and reinforced my belief that context, culture, and community are inseparable from mental health.
Today, I live in Tampa, Florida, with my husband, daughter, and two cats. When I'm not working, I'm usually at the beach, hiking, kayaking, or trying a new recipe at home.
Insurance & Fees
I believe cost should never be the thing standing between you and the support you deserve. I currently accept the following insurance plans:
Aetna
Cigna
United Healthcare
Oscar
Oxford
For clients who are out-of-network, I provide superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
Self-pay rates:
Initial session (60 min): $200
Follow-up sessions (53 min): $175
Not sure about your coverage? Reach out before your first appointment and I'll help you figure it out.
How to Get Started
Getting started is simple and low-pressure. Here's what to expect:
Book a free 15-minute consultation — This is a no-commitment call to see if we're a good fit. You can ask questions, share a little about what's going on, and get a feel for how I work.
First session (60 minutes) — We dive into your story: your history, current challenges, and what you're hoping to heal and build.
Your personalized treatment plan — After a few sessions, we build a roadmap together so you always know where we're going and how we'll get there.
All sessions are conducted virtually via a secure telehealth platform — all you need is a private space and a device with internet access.
