Matthew Silverstein, PhD
Hi, I'm Dr. Matt Silverstein.
For over thirty years, I've worked with individuals and couples seeking to understand themselves more deeply, find relief from distress, and create meaningful change in their lives. My approach is grounded in depth-oriented psychotherapy, which explores how earlier relationships, family and cultural histories, and patterns outside conscious awareness may continue to shape how we feel, relate, and make sense of our lives. Dreams, imagination, and creative expression can also become pathways toward new insights and possibilities.
People come to therapy for many reasons—sometimes with a clear sense of what's troubling them, and sometimes with questions that are harder to name. Working together offers a space to explore what's been difficult, better understand what may be keeping you stuck, and discover possibilities for change that aren't always apparent at the outset.
My approach is integrative, drawing on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, EMDR, LGBTQ+ affirming care, and other therapeutic methods as appropriate. I also bring attention to the influences of intergenerational trauma, social and cultural contexts, and systems of oppression in shaping our psychological lives.
My practice welcomes straight and LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, as well as those in other intimate relationships; creative professionals in theater, film, and television; young adults and students; people navigating midlife and later-life transitions; and those living with chronic illness and HIV. I offer online psychotherapy throughout California and New York.
Therapy can be meaningful and, at times, challenging. It invites you to approach difficult experiences with curiosity rather than judgment, and to discover aspects of yourself or your relationship that may have been overlooked or left behind—and are now ready to be embraced.
