Mindful Hearts Counseling
At Mindful Hearts Counseling, my mission is to provide high-quality, compassionate care to individuals in life transitions (i.e. moving to a new city, new job, empty nest, breakups), working through relationship challenges, neurodiversity, and anxiety/depression. I believe in taking a holistic approach to therapy, treating the whole person and not just their symptoms.
In working with life transitions - Therapy naturally provides relief from isolation and loneliness, therefore, validating the natural challenges of change and coping with life transitions. We can often forget that when life transitions shake up our life, we can benefit from targeted conversations to re-engage with and remember what's important to us.
In working with relationships challenges - relationships can be incredibly fulfilling and also triggering. Close relationships can and often do push our buttons. I enjoy supporting clients in identifying their triggers to relationship stressors, building confidence in communication skills, and solidifying boundaries.
In working with neurodiversity - whether it's been officially diagnosed or self-diagnosed (ADHD or Autism Spectrum). I support my neurodiverse clients through supportive executive functioning coaching and building emotional regulation strategies. Being neurospicy is a gift and can be empowered through specialized care to routines, self-care, emotional regulation tools and identifying values that can support organization.
In working with depression - Reconnecting to self through activities and expressing feelings of pain helps break down the negative thoughts related to depression. Depression tells us that we are not good enough or that we are not worthy of connection. I enjoy exploring the thoughts and memories connected to these emotions and sensations to first start with building connection and compassion with self.
In working with anxiety - I enjoy using education along with identifying how our thoughts contribute to fears and worst case scenario to work with anxiety. Another productive way to work on reducing anxiety is to take baby steps towards big goals through action and exposure. A lot of attention is give to the ambivalence of change and developing skills to trust in self.
I take a client-centered approach to therapy, focusing on the unique needs and goals of each individual. I am trained in a variety of evidence-based techniques and focus my approach to best meet the needs of my clients each session. I can offer post session exercises, practices, and book recommendations.
Specifically, I utilize EMDR with clients who are experiencing challenges moving past painful memories of the past or worried scenarios of the future. I believe building a strong connection to self-compassion is the foundation of any growth. I support my clients to develop compassionate and strength focused beliefs about themselves to collaborative work towards their goals. Other modalities that I have been trained in are ACT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing, IFS, and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP).
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic memories and experiences. It involves the use of guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation while the person recalls distressing memories. The goal is to reduce the emotional charge of these memories, helping individuals to reprocess and integrate them in a way that reduces psychological distress. EMDR is often used to treat trauma, PTSD, and other emotional challenges.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of psychotherapy that encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings rather than fight against them. It focuses on mindfulness and behavioral changes, helping people to live in alignment with their values and take meaningful actions despite difficult emotions or past experiences. The goal of ACT is to promote psychological flexibility, allowing individuals to develop healthier relationships with their thoughts and emotions, while also pursuing a rich and fulfilling life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a goal-oriented psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviors. It helps individuals understand how their thoughts, feelings, and actions are interconnected and how changing negative or unhelpful thoughts can lead to improved emotional well-being and behavior. CBT is often used to treat a variety of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and stress, by teaching practical skills for managing difficult emotions and situations.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, collaborative counseling approach designed to help individuals explore and resolve ambivalence about making positive changes in their lives. It focuses on enhancing a person's intrinsic motivation to change by helping them articulate their own reasons for change, strengthening their confidence in their ability to do so, and supporting them in overcoming barriers. MI is often used in situations involving behavior change, such as addiction, health issues, or other lifestyle changes.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of psychotherapy that views the mind as made up of different "parts," or subpersonalities, each with its own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These parts often represent different aspects of a person's inner world, such as the inner critic, the wounded child, or the protector. IFS aims to help individuals identify, understand, and harmonize these parts, promoting self-awareness and healing. The goal is to help a person access their core "Self," which is compassionate, calm, and centered, to heal and integrate the different parts of their psyche.
KAP - Clients who are a good fit for KAP are those who feel stuck and want to do deeper work to move beyond the stuckness. The medicine can also support clients to tap into their capacity for change or break through barriers. KAP can bring back hope and is a powerful too to improve your outcomes and depend the therapeutic relationship. I work with clients in a group and individual setting for KAP.

Incredible experience and by far the best sessions I've had and most comfortable I've felt since I've started going to therapy 10+ years ago

Vanessa is an incredible psychotherapist who has helped me and will continue to help me in so many ways. I reached out to her during one of the toughest moments of my life to date, and since then I have been on an upward trajectory I wouldn't have believed a few months ago. Her ability to listen in a way that invites introspection, as well as her thoughtful questions and conjectures on why I feel certain things around certain events has helped me grow in so many ways. Not only this, but she is also exemplary in terms of providing me with tools that I can use outside of our sessions so that I can continue on my journey of healing.
To say that I am grateful for the opportunity to work with her would be an understatement. In actuality, she saved my life, my future, and my ability to trust in others. I am so excited to continue as her patient so than I can rediscover my self confidence and better cope with future emotional trauma and obstacles that may arise later in life.

Vanessa has been nothing short of fantastic to work with. I've been meeting with her for a few years now, and really seeing the progress between each session.
One thing that has been very beneficial, is Vanessa's ability to ask me the right questions that make me think about decisions/thoughts I have, and those stay with me once I leave the session.
I've been meeting with Vanessa for a variety of stressful reasons, and I feel like I can discuss any matter with her and be extremely comfortable in my delivery.
In a space that can be scary to jump into (I was worried about therapy at first), I'd highly recommend working with Vanessa to achieve your goals & understand yourself more.
I've heard from many friends they got matched with a therapist that didn't work out. Had I known this info before, I would have recommended Vanesse every time, so I'm writing this review to recommend her to anyone viewing this profile.
Thank you so much for everything you do for me & many others, Vanessa!
