I always liked how things worked; I think I inherited my father's curiosity. He was a mechanical engineer. I was never satisfied with just playing with my toys; I like to know how they worked. I really loved playing with transformers growing up, but I have to admit I was a little extra as I would even take a screwdriver and take apart the transformers just to see if I could put them back together.
The desire to analyze things wasn’t just with toys. If you had told me I’d watch Christopher Reeves 1978 Superman more than 100 times, I couldn’t deny it. I will argue that “Some people can read war and peace and walk away thinking it’s a simple adventure, Others can read the ingredients with a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets to the universe”. Dune’s “I must not fear, fear is the mind killer ….. I will permit it to pass over me and threw me…. Where the fear has gone. There will be nothing only I will remain.' How Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl emphasizes how our attitude can influence our ability to endure and be resilient when faced with adversity. The alchemist taking all of these previously mentioned ideas and then showing us how these ideas play out with the people that we meet along our own personal journeys.
My chemical engineering degree allowed me to explore a college experience where I learned how things work on from a microscopic level to a large level. It gave me an opportunity to look at how processes worked, optimize in them, and then test them to see if I can make the next version better than the prior version.
Orthopaedics is a specialty that allows me to do tangible work in order to restore peoples function. I get to mentally puzzle solve, while physically restore tissues such as realigning fractures or connecting tendons. Orthopedics also offered me an opportunity to integrate technology, an innovation into medicine. My involvement in developing telemedicine, Ergonomic, and patient reported outcome projects has been highly satisfying. My work with Epic, electronic healthcare management system, allow me to work on projects, the focus on relational databases, registries, and questionnaire development. My exposure to the patient reported outcome measures, as well as the data analytics and score interpretation task force was very influential in creating my attitude towards collecting and focusing on actionable data with regards to patient outcomes. Centralizing my practice to focus on patient outcomes, patient experience, staff experience, and high value creates a focus in delivering care that recognizes everybody’s experience is unique, and I want to contribute as much as I can so my patients can recover from their injury and move onto the next journey of their life.
