Physical Therapy Fit For Life
My name is Gerard Desmond owner of Physical Therapy Fit For Life in Leland, North Carolina. I also see patients virtually from the State of New York,
I am a practicing physical therapist for the past thirty-five years. I have extensive experience in neurology as well as in the field of sports rehabilitation with athletes at all levels of competition. I have provided a “hands on” approach to treating orthopedics and sports-related injuries on a recreational level, as well as, a professional sports level. My sports experience includes working with athletes from the New Jersey Nets, New York Rangers, Alvin Ailey American dancers, professional tennis players, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Amateur boxers, and baseball athletes.
I chose physical therapy as a profession to make an impact on people’s lives and after many years practicing with a BS degree in physical therapy I completed my doctorate in 2012. I also received formal recognition of clinical excellence by the American Physical Therapy Association with specialty certifications in both Orthopedics (OCS) and Sports Medicine (SCS), which is a rarity as not many people in the United States have both certifications. I am recognized as a specialist amongst my peers, physicians and by the many universities who have sent me students to teach and develop their clinical skills; a curriculum requirement. The State University of Buffalo gave me the Al Caffiero award for excellence in clinical instruction in 2019. I also became a first responder and then an EMT volunteering in the Glen Cove NY community for the past 5 years.
What separate’s me from other physical therapists is my experience, my positive attitude and my passion. My philosophy is to make an impact and difference in people’s lives, having the highest expectation for each and everyone. I encourage patient’s to take ownership of their health. It is important to make people feel enlightened and love the process of getting better. This is what I do best. I spend the time that patient’s need to get better and provide direct one on one treatment each session with all patients. My whole life I have been invested in learning how to do a better job. I show up early to work every day at 6 a.m. and usually the last person to leave at 8:45 p.m. I respond to emails and phone calls, and try to give substantive feedback to my patient’s. I intentionally convey my passion and enthusiasm through my words and actions.
I lay out the purpose of my patients treatment, what the expected outcomes are, and how they will reach their goal. As the treatment goes along, I ask for feedback with questions on what I can do better and adjust according to their needs.
As Denzel Washington once said” Never give up without commitment. Without commitment, you’ll never start or more importantly, without consistency, you’ll never finish. Don’t just aspire to make a living, Aspire to make a difference. “ This is what I strive to do everyday “Make a difference”.
