Pondworks Psychiatry & Psychotherapy

Before you book, it helps to know what kind of practice you are walking into — because we are not built like most of what a quick-scheduling format prepares you for. Pondworks practices Psychodynamically-Informed Medical Care. In plain terms, that means we treat the person and not just the symptom list, taking the time to understand how your history, your relationships, and your inner life shape what brings you in. We reject the 15-minute med-check model and the absentee-supervision arrangements that have become common in psychiatry. Every member of our clinical team is backed by more than 500 hours a year of dedicated supervision and case discussion, led by our founder, Dr. Bernard Kim, MD — Dartmouth-trained, a Boston Psychoanalytic fellow, with more than twenty years in practice. What your first visit actually is This is the part online booking does not prepare you for, so we want to be direct. Your first appointment is a consultation, not a guaranteed prescription. Its purpose is to arrive at a careful diagnostic impression and a thoughtful recommendation for treatment. In simpler situations, that work can be completed in the first visit, and treatment may begin right away. In moderate or complex situations — which are common, and nothing to be alarmed by — a single visit is often not enough to responsibly finish the evaluation. When that is the case, your provider will tell you partway through the appointment, so expectations can be discussed openly rather than discovered at the end. If you are hoping to leave the first visit with a prescription in hand, we ask you to hold that expectation loosely. Sometimes that is where the evaluation leads. Often, with care, it is not — and that restraint is the point. We are in it for the long haul Pondworks is not a refill counter. We build longitudinal treatment relationships, usually measured in many months and frequently in years — rarely less than three to six months. Our aim is to be your provider through the chapters of life, adjusting course as you change. If what you are looking for is a one-time, fast transaction, we are likely not the right fit, and we would rather tell you that honestly now than disappoint you later. Our providers Care at Pondworks is delivered by our physician and our psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants. These Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) do not work alone or under loose oversight. They practice inside the same intensive supervision structure that defines us, with Dr. Kim and the team engaged in their cases on an ongoing basis.
