Ramy Danon, LMFT

Do you find yourself overthinking, replaying conversations, revisiting past decisions, questioning your decisions, predicting problems, or expecting something to go wrong? Maybe you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or caught in patterns that create conflict or keep you avoiding what needs to be addressed. You are thoughtful, observant, and more capable than you may currently feel. But the same mind that notices details, thinks ahead, and considers different possibilities can go into overdrive. You may feel on edge much of the time, dwell on the past, get irritated by small things, feel flat, or disconnect from things you once enjoyed. You may be going through this on your own or in a relationship with someone dealing with some of the same things. I am Ramy Danon, a University of Southern California-trained psychotherapist and California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with more than 20 years of experience. I work with adults and couples of different backgrounds and identities. LGBTQIA+ clients are welcome. I also taught at the university and college level for 19 years. --- ## WHAT I WORK WITH I work with a broad range of concerns and do not expect your situation to fit neatly into one category. The following are some of the issues I work with most often, not a complete list. * OVERTHINKING AND SELF-DOUBT - Thoughts you cannot turn off, getting stuck on something that bothers you throughout the day, constantly analyzing yourself, replaying conversations, questioning your decisions, predicting problems, regretting past choices, and having difficulty moving forward * ANXIETY - Generalized anxiety disorder, chronic worry, panic attacks, fears, feeling on edge, and social anxiety * DEPRESSION - Low mood, irritability, loss of interest, feeling flat or disconnected, and difficulty enjoying things that once mattered to you * COUPLES AND RELATIONSHIPS - Communication difficulties, recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, trust, commitment, compatibility, intimacy, infidelity or betrayal, one partner losing their voice or becoming passive, separation, and divorce * MOTIVATION AND DIRECTION - Feeling passive, stuck, or unsure what you want; putting things off; having trouble getting started or following through; and becoming absorbed in a partner's goals or passions while losing touch with your own * STRESS AND BURNOUT - Work stress, career decisions, imposter syndrome, competing responsibilities, feeling pulled in different directions, and difficulty knowing what to prioritize * TRAUMA AND PTSD - Past or recent experiences that continue to affect your emotions, relationships, reactions, or sense of safety * SELF-ESTEEM AND BOUNDARIES - Confidence, shame, guilt, people-pleasing, worrying about what other people think of you, difficulty saying what you need, and trouble setting or maintaining boundaries * MEN'S ISSUES - Identity, confidence, comfort with yourself, emotional expression, relationships, sexual concerns, performance anxiety, purpose, and becoming more comfortable with therapy * EMOTIONAL REGULATION - Emotional overwhelm, anger, irritability, mood swings, reacting too quickly, holding feelings in for too long, and trouble recovering after something puts you in a bad mood * LIFE CHANGES AND GRIEF - Grief, loss, difficult adjustments, and major changes in your relationships, work, identity, or direction * SLEEP PROBLEMS - Insomnia, racing thoughts at night, difficulty falling or staying asleep, and sleep problems connected with anxiety, depression, or stress * FAMILY AND SOCIAL CONFLICT - Family conflict, parenting stress, peer relationship problems, loneliness, feeling left out, and recurring interpersonal patterns * ADHD AND ORGANIZATION - Difficulty concentrating, organizing, prioritizing, managing time, following through, or keeping track of what needs to be done * AVOIDANCE AND PROCRASTINATION - Avoiding things that need attention, postponing important conversations or decisions, feeling overwhelmed before starting, and waiting until problems become harder to address * INTIMACY AND SEXUAL CONCERNS - Sexual confidence, performance anxiety, differences in desire, emotional or physical disconnection, and compatibility * HABITS AND ADDICTIONS - Habit change, compulsive or repetitive behaviors, substance use, and other addiction-related concerns * PERSONALITY PATTERNS - Personality disorders and longstanding emotional, behavioral, or relationship patterns that continue to repeat * CHRONIC PAIN AND HEALTH - Coping with chronic pain, chronic illness, health problems, and the emotional or relationship stress that can accompany them --- ## INDIVIDUAL THERAPY We can work on communicating more effectively, exploring the expectations you bring to your relationships, and recognizing roles and patterns you may have been replaying. Those roles may have served you long ago, but they may need revision now. I will help you develop a better relationship with yourself and others, find your voice, and make decisions that support the life and relationships that matter to you. We can identify what is keeping you stuck, clarify what you want, and develop practical ways to respond more effectively. I love helping people recognize their abilities and expand what they believe is possible. The race is with yourself. The person you are competing with is your past self. Everyone has something they can do especially well, but that does not mean it is the only thing they can do. A lot of it is training and practice. --- ## HELPING MEN BECOME COMFORTABLE WITH THERAPY I am especially good at helping men who feel uncertain about therapy or do not like therapy become comfortable with the process, participate, and open up. I do not expect you to arrive already knowing how to talk about everything. We can begin with what is happening, what is not working, and what you want to be different. Therapy does not have to feel heavy, artificial, or like someone is trying to force feelings out of you. We can have a direct conversation, identify the problem, and work from there. --- ## COUPLES THERAPY With couples, I help both partners feel heard, communicate more effectively, understand each other's wants and needs, and reconnect with the good feelings they once had. We look at what keeps happening between you, the expectations each of you brings to the relationship, and the roles you may have learned in your families while growing up. You may repeatedly end up in the same conflict, avoid difficult conversations, or put off important issues until resentment begins building. One partner may feel responsible for all the emotional labor and become tired of always asking what the other person thinks. The other partner may feel criticized, become defensive, shut down, or stop expressing an opinion. I do not use a cookie-cutter approach. I adapt the work to each partner's family history, upbringing, communication style, and needs. We work on building understanding and compassion, changing habits that keep creating conflict, reinforcing small successes, rebuilding trust and closeness, and developing skills to face challenges as a team. Real change begins with honesty. Knowing yourself and being honest with yourself builds trust with your partner and with yourself. My role is to help each of you say what you really think and need while making sure that both partners remain heard and taken seriously. --- ## EVENING ONLINE THERAPY I provide secure online therapy throughout California, with evening appointments available for people who cannot easily step away from work or other responsibilities during the day. You do not have to rush to fit therapy into the middle of a workday or meet while your attention is divided between everything else you need to do. Meeting in the evening can give you time to clear your mind and reflect on the events of the day while they are still fresh. You then have the next morning ahead of you to implement decisions, act on your intentions, or apply what you learned in the session. Evening appointments can also make it easier for couples to meet when both partners are available and neither person has to rush back to work. You can have the conversation when you have time to focus on each other and what is happening in the relationship. --- ## HOW I WORK Therapy with me is a real conversation: active, direct, caring, collaborative, and solution-focused. It is not a top-down relationship where you are being managed or talked at. I see myself as a support to you. I listen carefully, ask a lot of questions, and tell you honestly what I see in a way intended to help. I welcome problems and the challenge of working through difficult situations together. I value authenticity, candid emotion, and directness, and I want clients to feel comfortable bringing in dilemmas and the things they may usually avoid saying out loud. That kind of openness allows us to speak plainly, think clearly, and work together in a way that is supportive, strategic, and grounded in what is really bothering you and what you actually want to address. Together, we identify what is happening, understand the patterns that keep repeating, clarify what you want, and develop practical ways to respond more effectively. I adapt the work to you rather than following a script. --- ## MY TREATMENT METHODS I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems, experiential work, psychodynamic therapy, and solution-focused therapy. These methods give us different ways to understand what is happening and respond to it. I use what fits you and your situation. Experiential therapy: I check in with you throughout our session so you can notice what you are feeling in real time and make sense of it as it is happening. We use that emotional information to guide the work, so you feel more grounded, more clear, and more able to respond differently outside of therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy: Keeping emotions at bay often involves shifting your perspective. I help you spot the thought patterns that pull you into the same moods and reactions, then practice new ways of thinking and responding until they become habits you can use in daily life. Psychodynamic therapy: We build insight into patterns that repeat in your life and relationships and what keeps them running. When you can see a pattern clearly, you can catch it earlier, understand your reactions with more accuracy, and choose a different response. Family systems and solution-focused therapy: We look at how family history, relationship patterns, roles, and expectations affect what is happening now. At the same time, we continually clarify what you want, recognize what is already working, and identify practical steps that support your goals. --- ## YOUR FIRST SESSION You do not need to come in with everything figured out. In our first session, I will get a sense of what is weighing on you and what feels most urgent. We will talk through what has been happening, check in on different areas of your life, and begin identifying the patterns or bottlenecks that may be getting in your way, hurting your relationships, or affecting your mood or peace of mind. The next step should be clearer after this session. --- ## AS WE CONTINUE The work remains centered on your needs. We check in on what is changing, what remains difficult, and whether our approach is helping. We can adjust as your needs change and apply what we learn to your relationships, work, decisions, and other important areas of your life. You will have a place where you can speak openly and feel taken seriously. --- ## BETWEEN SESSIONS Clients may send brief updates by email between sessions. This can help us keep track of something important that happened, a decision you made, or something you want to remember to discuss. More involved concerns are addressed during appointments, where we have the time and attention to work through them properly. --- ## GETTING STARTED I understand how difficult it can be to trust someone with the way you are feeling, especially if you struggle to ask for help. You do not need to know exactly what to say or have everything organized before we meet. Getting started may be the hardest part. I am eager to learn about what is bothering you. I am currently accepting new clients.
