Riverdale Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases is committed to delivering the highest quality of care in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology – making us the first choice for digestive and liver diseases. We are a five-physician practice of gastroenterologists serving the Bronx area for 28 years. In addition to our office locations, we offer outpatient procedures at the Advanced Endoscopy Center (AEC).
Being a larger practice offers benefits to both our patients and referring physicians. We accept more insurance plans from our patients and give them an experienced and knowledgeable support system. Patients using the endoscopy center for their endoscopic procedures will find that most major insurance plans will cover the procedure with better benefits than if the same procedure was done at the hospital.

Dr Stein is an excellent physician. He was very thorough and kind. Unfortunately, the medical issue we went to see him for requires a different specialist but he put me on the right track and explained the issue well while offering great advice. His medical assistant was a sweetheart as well. Overall very impressed with this office.

The doctor went out of his way to accommodate the patient.
The elevator was out of service and the doctor came down to another office to discuss her situation.
He assisted her going up the stairs so that he could eventually perform an examination.
He provided a concise explanation as to the issue, gave advice and provided the necessary doctors to see.

I had a great experience with NP Christiane Silver. She was attentive, compassionate, and a great listener. She took the time to review my previous exams to better understand my concerns and made me feel heard throughout the visit. I especially appreciated that she communicated my concerns directly with the gastroenterologist, Dr. Gutwein, to ensure continuity of care. The visit was quick and efficient, yet I never felt rushed.

I was very impressed with the general atmosphere from the start. It was also very surprising that I did not have to fill in the load of paper work generally required. It was done for me by the receptionist. I was put immediately at ease by Ms. Silver, the NP. She was both warm and very attentive. As was the doctor who joined us later. The entire staff was outstanding and went out of their way to help me. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend Ms. Silver and the entire staff.

As someone who has worked in healthcare alongside executives, I’m disheartened by how disconnected this visit felt. The NP seemed more focused on her computer than on understanding my symptoms, appearing fearful of Dr. Gutwin Sr.—even correcting me as if she’d be reprimanded. When I explained my condition, the doctor dismissed me, saying I “wasn’t making sense” simply because I didn’t use textbook pain descriptors like “sharp” or “dull.” I felt unheard and dehumanized. Shockingly, this private office experience was worse than what I’ve seen in under-resourced public hospitals. I was scheduled for an endoscopy but will cancel both the procedure and follow-up. As someone who implements AI for enterprise healthcare systems, it’s clear: when empathy and active listening are absent, AI will, and should replace providers like these.
