Stellar Physical & Occupational Therapy
Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) both help patients recover from injuries, surgeries, or medical conditions, but they focus on different goals.
Physical Therapy (PT) primarily focuses on improving movement, mobility, strength, balance, and function, especially involving the lower extremities such as the hips, knees, ankles, and feet. PT is often recommended for conditions such as sports injuries, joint replacements, back pain, balance disorders, and difficulty walking. The goal is to help patients move more comfortably, safely, and independently.
Occupational Therapy (OT) primarily focuses on the upper extremities, including the shoulders, arms, elbows, wrists, and hands. OT helps patients improve the skills needed for everyday activities, such as dressing, bathing, cooking, writing, typing, driving, and returning to work or hobbies. Occupational therapists also help patients regain fine motor skills, hand strength, coordination, and independence following injuries, surgery, stroke, or neurological conditions.
While there is some overlap between the two specialties, a simple way to remember the difference is:
PT = Lower body, mobility, walking, balance, and overall movement
OT = Upper body, hand and arm function, and everyday activities
Depending on your condition, your provider may recommend PT, OT, or both to help you achieve the best possible recovery.
