Being Icarus: Psychotherapy for Mortals Existential Psychotherapy services of New York accompanies persons along life's journey in a non-judgmental, supportive manner. Our main focus is helping clients come into an authentic relationship with themselves, others and the world around them. Existential Therapy ( University of Vienna trained) and Narrative Therapy along with DBT skills are provided for our clients to take the time to stop, understand themselves, find their authentic self and gain the courage and momentum to move forward in life as they choose, on their path, in the manner they wish. Dr. Ryan has been teaching philosophy at the college level for decades, but also kept working in the mental health field. She has had a life with its own adversities requiring multiple jobs to raise two daughters alone. She has done a lot of work on how to be content, how to live the the good life, being human, understanding our minds, our conscious and unconscious experiences and navigating through our journey. Dr Ryan keeps an eye on where we want to be, and why. She went back and obtained her LCSW to establish her private practice as she believes the world is a confusing place and people need clarity, especially about their lives and their deeper philosophical beliefs, as they motivate all else. Dr. Ryan continued her training through the University of Vienna, an advanced degree in Existential Analysis. From an EA perspective, making meaning is the main thing we as humans can do. It is a very powerful thing, but at times we don't know how, we can't find it, we lose hope, we get hurt. EA helps us to recover from the realities of our lives while also building our lives in a more authentic manner, in a manner we would choose. Life should not be a series of thoughtless accidents. Like Icarus, many of us have received good advice and not taken it and we fall. This just makes us human. Many lost souls wander through the world injured and confused. We have little information and are making our best guesses. The world is a noisy place and living a human life takes a lot of energy, blood, sweat and tears. It is confusing and at times excruciatingly difficult. EA can help with that. Each of us needs to find what makes the struggle worth it for us. When we know where we are trying to get and why, we improve our chances of living that life exponentially. Dr. Ryan meaningfully provides a safe, non-judgmental place that allows for people to step back and look at what has happened, to be authentic with themselves, maybe for the first time. To help one come to understand what they have and have not done, how they feel about it and where to go from here. Process distress, enhance skills, empower.
