Thomas Youm
Dr. Thomas Youm is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in the treatment of athletic injuries and performs arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the hip, shoulder, elbow and knee. He has a special interest in joint preservation surgery for the active patient. He performs cutting-edge procedures such as hip arthroscopy for labral tears and femoral acetabular impingement, high tibial osteotomy for preservation of the knee, arthroscopic assisted core decompression for avascular necrosis of the hip, cartilage transplantation procedures in the knee. Patients also seek out Dr. Youm for biological alternatives to surgery such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow and adipose derived stem cell injections. For those patients requiring knee and shoulder replacements, Dr. Youm promotes same day discharge.
A native of Long Island, New York, Dr. Youm graduated cum laude from Yale University. He attended New York University Medical School where he was elected to the AOA honors society. He completed his orthopaedic residency at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. While in residency, Dr. Youm completed specialized training in orthopaedic trauma surgery at Seattle’s Harborview Hospital, one of the busiest and most respected trauma centers in the country.
After residency, Dr. Youm went on to complete a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California. During his fellowship, he participated in the orthopaedic care of the Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers, Avengers, Sparks, Galaxy, and USC Football teams. He was also selected to be the physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers Dominican Republic team in the spring of 2005.
Dr. Youm has published over 100 articles and has over 200 presentations at numerous national meetings on the topics of orthopaedic sports medicine. He is a Clinical Professor at the NYU School of Medicine where he teaches both medical students and orthopaedic residents. Dr. Youm has twice won the Teacher of the Year Award which is voted and determined by the graduating class of orthopaedic chief residents. He is one of the main instructors for the sports medicine fellows at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. He is currently Director of Hip Arthroscopy and, in this role, he runs the clinical research for hip arthroscopy at NYU. He is a member of the Hip Center and the Sports Medicine department at the NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital.
Dr. Youm is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, International Society for Hip Arthroscopy and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

I made an appointment via Zocdoc to go on the same day, and the office was unaware and unprepared to see me. The technician sitting on the right wasn't so nice because of that. Waited over an hour to see the doctor for 5 minutes. The doctor was very nice and professional. I wish I just didnt have to wait that long.

1st off, the location is phenomenal. I love the new office, I love the staff, they're pleasant, professional and precise with everything. I basically was in and out. Dr. Youm is the best.

While Dr. Youm is considered a top doctor, it's still important to explain to the patient all of their options even if the patient is fearful of surgery. He spent no more than 10 minutes with me and once that time ran out so did his patience. I didn't have time for questions and I know that first appointments are billed to the insurance for more than the 10 minutes that this doctor spent with me. I want to cry. I went here thinking there would be a comprehensive approach to my condition but instead I got nothing.

The doctor and the nurses were great. I’ll be going back for my follow up, but the wait time was pretty excruciating (appointment was at 8:30am and I wasn’t seen by the doctor until 9:30) and the woman who helped me at the front desk was not friendly. I also just don’t understand why I bother to fill out the documents online for all these appointments when I’m ALWAYS handed the paper ones upon arrival. I asked the unfriendly associate at the desk if she didn’t get my papers through zocdoc because I had already filled out all the info she was asking me for, and only after reiterating it a second time did she ask another member of the staff for help and was able to locate it. Coincidentally, I overheard another patient say the same thing to her as I was waiting post check-in and she also told this patient she didn’t have her forms from online and requested she fill them all out again. Sigh.

Front desk staff were fine. Elderly (doctor?) walked me back to room and took initial info and was curt and I was uncomfortable. He also reprimanded front desk staff in front of waiting room full of people. He seems like maybe a retired doc who doesn't want to stop working? X-ray tech was nice and next person I saw who took more info was even nicer. Dr. Youm was pleasant but visit was very quick. Not bad bedside manner, not great. He's a highly skilled doctor/surgeon from what I've read though, especially when it comes to hip stuff.

I’ve been going to Dr. Youm for almost 10 years. He’s performed three surgeries on me successfully correcting those three issues that I had. He’s been unbelievably professional & very personal. He takes the time to listen and ask you if you have anything else you wanna ask him. He’s an incredible surgeon but he’s a really amazing person. Highly recommended. His office staff has always been very kind and professional.

After suffering a serious hockey injury, I was worried that I would never be able to play again. I first visited another orthopedic surgeon who essentially recommended surgery (that would not be covered by insurance--not just my insurance, but any insurance). I was very hesitant to proceed with surgery not only because it would be out of pocket, but because I was not sure it was necessary. I booked an appointment with Dr. Youm, and he immediately told me it was far too early to consider surgery. He recommended physical therapy first and we would think about surgery if my injury did not heal. I just saw Dr. Youm for a follow up about a year after my injury and he fully cleared me to return to playing hockey. I fully recommend Dr. Youm to any patient looking for a friendly, knowledgeable, and honest doctor.

I highly recommend Dr. Thomas Youm. My overall experience was very positive. Both Dr. Thomas and his assistant had a perfect bedside manner. The only thing they can improve is the front desk staff's attitude. They were not so nice, and they didn't let me know that I had to pay a visit fee even though my insurance was in-network.

The whole experience was frustrating. I am not sure but all of his white patients went ahead even if they arrived after me. I waited over 45 minutes to see him
after an additional unnecessary X-ray and already waiting an hour. Even though I already had an X-ray he insisted I “needed” another one. Spent five minutes to tell me what I already knew. I had a bad ankle sprain Didn’t advise on the proper physical therapy to take or care for that matter. Doctor literally did nothing for me. Honestly wish I would have gone to someone else.

Dr Youm and his staff are attentive and helpful. I came all the way from a small town in Pennsylvania (3hours) away to have my initial consultation with Dr. Youm. He is one of only a few doctors who specialize in the surgery that I need. He was honest and upfront with me. Amazing, did a great job with arthroscopic knee surgery, cleaned up a meniscal tear & it healed up beautifully. I suffer from chronic inflammation so I wasn’t sure it was going to be worth it but he found exactly where to clean and drain my bakers cyst.

Dr. Youm is a succinct surgeon who wastes no time examining you and discussing symptoms and options. I was very scared to have surgery but he was thorough and even calming. I had a hip tear and impingement and bone spur and had seen several other drs who dismissed surgery as I was having growing visible difficulties walking and basic mobility issues. He was referred to me by a support group I was in for chronic pain as both hips are affected and my back. He found I had not just one tear and FAI but found I had bilateral issues in both hips! No other dr had even taken the time to Xray my other damaged hip. Though I’m still having pain in my hip post op, I’m confident in Dr. Youms expertise and future help for both hips. Great dr and very respected by all other drs I’ve seen. He’s well known by medical professionals.
