We specialize in helping children, teens, and young adults navigate life’s challenges through a personalized, thoughtful approach that combines psychiatric assessment, medication management, and supportive psychotherapy. Founded and led by Dr. Joan Bourne, a doctoral-prepared psychiatric nurse practitioner and licensed master social worker, Wonderland BMH offers comprehensive in-person visits in Alpharetta, Georgia and telehealth services to clients throughout Georgia. Whether your child is struggling with anxiety, your teen is facing the pressures of school and social life, or you’re a young adult coping with depression or ADHD, we’re here to listen—and to help. Our Approach: At Wonderland, we know that mental health is not one-size-fits-all. That’s why we take time to get to know each individual, understand their history, and tailor a treatment plan that works best for their needs and goals. Our sessions are rooted in mutual respect, cultural humility, and a deep belief in the resilience of the human spirit. We support clients with a wide range of concerns, including: • Anxiety and panic disorders • Depression and mood instability • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) • Trauma and PTSD • Eating disorders (non-acute outpatient support) • School-related stress and academic pressure • LGBTQ+ affirming care • Life transitions and identity development Our treatment includes psychiatric evaluation, diagnostic clarification, and medication management, often alongside supportive psychotherapy. We also coordinate care with primary care providers, therapists, and schools when needed, to ensure our clients receive well-rounded, team-based support. Telehealth Convenience with Personal Connection: Services at Wonderland BMH are available via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth, giving families across Georgia access to high-quality mental health care from the comfort of home. We aim to make the experience as easy and accessible as possible, offering flexible scheduling and thoughtful communication every step of the way. Insurance and Payment Options: We are currently in-network with Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Cigna, and Optum with more insurances coming soon. For clients who are out-of-network, we offer self-pay options and provide superbills that can be submitted for potential insurance reimbursement. My journey in finding the care my son needed was incredibly challenging. I had such a hard time trying to find a doctor for my son. She called and asked me what I was looking for during our visit. If I were speaking to a friend, I would say, "Girl, Dr. Joan has been precisely what my daughter needed." We had an appointment three weeks ago, and my daughter has significantly improved! She was suffering for 3 weeks with severe depression. She could not get out of the bed. She is now able to attend class, clean her room, do the dishes, and, most importantly, speak with me. I have never seen her smile so bright. She struggled in school and has just completed this semester with passing grades. As a parent, it was exhausting, but I did not give up. My daughter's siblings asked me what was going on; she is actually talking to us. Praise the Lord! Her father has finally relaxed, and we are enjoying the fact that Dr. Joan provided her with the correct medication. Dr. Joan is culturally sensitive, patient, parent-child interaction focused, knowledgeable, compassionate, comforting, nonjudgmental, collaborative, and patient-centered. I can not speak enough positive things about Joan. She did wonders for my boys and helped hem overcome so much turmoil that they endured. Because of her my boys are happy, healthy and mentally strong. No other provider has come close to the care she provides. Hands down the most kind caring person to work with.
