Long before I was ever Dr. Alia, I was the daughter of a first generation immigrant who came to this country with $350 in his pocket, 4 sentences of English, and his big American Dream. My father worked tirelessly to achieve his Dream and graduated top of his medical class to eventually become one of the top cardiologists at the Cleveland Clinic. Not only did he succeed because of hard work and perseverance, but also because of his unrivaled passion to care for his patients.
young-alia-familyHis passion and work ethic was instilled in me as a child and I became the first female in my family to graduate from an American university and embark on my career as a dentist with one goal: the wellbeing and happiness of my patients.
I earned my undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, I lived in New York City where I completed my surgical based residency program. There began the process of learning how to manage dental patients’ anxiety and fears of dentistry, and turning it around into a positive and fun experience.
Following my residency, I needed to find a city that I could call home. I visited my best friend who was living in Chicago at the time, and instantly fell in love with the city. There was no place like Chicago in the world; a perfect combination of big city lifestyle and Midwestern humility and spirit.
I practiced in Chicago for several years until my husband’s job took us on an incredible adventure to Dubai. It was an eye-opening experience where I was lucky to meet people from countless countries and cultures, and travel around the world. I gained a perspective that cannot be replicated and forged life-long friendships.
In another unexpected twist, we returned
