Dr. Pollina is a native of western PA, growing up in Johnstown. He attended Clarion University where he graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Biology and was among the finalists for Biology major of the year in 1979. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine, which he chose as his #1 pick among dental schools he was accepted.
Upon graduation, in 1983, he opened a private practice in Shadyside. At that time he worked as an associate at offices in Greensburg, South Hills, Wilkensburg, South Side, and McKees Rocks. He joined the Shadyside Hospital Medical Staff in 1986 as a member of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. As a staff member he participated in the Independent Medical Review Department evaluating dental third party claims associated with Motor Vehicle Accidents and Workman’s Compensation, including the workers from the City of Pittsburgh and US Airways. During this time he was asked by the PA Department of State, Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs to review dental records in specific case by case analysis.
In an effort to facilitate an underserved and nearly forgotten population, Dr. Pollina traveled to many long term care homes, including the Heritage Shadyside, Longwood, Lincoln-Lemington, Asbury Heights, rendering care to the elderly with no financial ability to seek care. Associated with treatment of the elderly he incorporated six years of making house calls, in a 60 mile radius to the hospital, to fabricate and adjust ill fitting dentures to home bound patients with no means to get dental care.
From 1987-1992 he was a member of the Medical Staff of the Harmerville Rehabilitation Center as the only member of the Dental Service evaluating oral complications of head trauma at the Center. Also during this time he participated in medical rounds with the Oncology Team evaluating oral complications of cancer treatments on the in patient population. These services were performed as a service to the hospital and patients with no reimbursement. In 1992 Dr. Pollina opened a practice in Johnstown focusing on a segment of the population in 5 counties with medical assistance. In a 20 year period over 600,000 patient visits have been successfully treated. This office included a dual degree Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, a Prosthodontist, Orthodontist, Periodontist and numerous Pediatric Dental Residents from Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh in a collaboration with the past Dental Director of the Children’s Dental Residency Program. He was a member of the Conemaugh Hospital Medical Staff for a short time in 1992-94. In the mid 90’s he opened The Dental Implant Center, in conjunction with a Maxillofacial Surgeon, treating patients with single tooth dental implants to Advanced Dental Rehabilitation.
Through the years Dr. Pollina has worked very closely with some of the leaders in the country in the fields of Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatrics and Orthodontics. Through communication with multiple specialists total patient care is always at an optimal level.
Presently Dr. Pollina is affiliated with UPMC Shadyside and East with a private practice at the Shadyside Campus. At the Shadyside Office the focus is on Dental Implant Restoration, Advanced Crown and Bridge, along with general preventative dentistry. He provides evaluations and care for the patients at the Hillman Cancer Center in need of dental clearance for oncology treatments and in patient consultation. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the PA Dental Association, the East End Dental Society, the Spear Faculty Club, the American Association of Dental Sleep Medicine, and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain.
Dr. Pollina is preparing for Board Certification, and Diplomate Status, in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine. He will soon complete the Mini Residency at UCLA with a focus on treatment of sleep disordered breathing with Oral Appliances. The UCLA program was the first Dental School in the world, as well as the first mini residency, to teach Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Pollina will offer treatment to patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea in private practice in Johnstown and Shadyside, with future locations at Jefferson Hospital and Beaver. The offices of Western Pennsylvania Dental Sleep Medicine will treat only these medically compromised patients.
Dr. Pollina enjoys biking, skiing, extensive exercise, travel and cooking. He lives with his wonderful wife Cate, a Le Cordon Blue chef, who has an extraordinary knowledge of food and its effects on the body. Along with two labs and a cat they reside in both Ligonier and Pittsburgh.
