Dr. Bernstein graduated Georgetown University Medical School with honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society. Following medical school, he completed his general surgery internship at New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center. During residency at the New York University/Hospital for Joint Diseases-Orthopaedic Institute, he participated in extensive orthopaedic research. Dr. Bernstein’s research culminated with authoring publications in the following peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals: The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Arthroscopy, The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The American Journal of Orthopedics, Orthopedics, and the Bulletin of the Hospital for Joint Diseases. In his final year of residency, Dr. Bernstein was awarded a Senior Resident Research Award from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU/HJD.
Following his residency, Dr. Bernstein completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. This training was dedicated to sports medicine and athletic trauma. During this training, Dr. Bernstein had the privilege to join the medical staff of the New York Jets, New York Islanders, Hofstra University, Hunter College and the United States Open Tennis Tournament.
Dr. Bernstein joined Garden State Orthopaedics as an attending physician in 2003. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and was amongst the first group of orthopaedic surgeons in the nation to obtain a Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Bernstein has a specialty interest in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery–including ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic shoulder instability/rotator cuff repair, and elbow arthroscopy.
