Dr. Ahmed is board certified and has particular interest in colorectal cancer screening, Barrett’s esophagus (a condition of abnormal cellular activity that can increase the risk of esophageal cancer), inflammatory diseases and disorders of the bile duct.
Dr. Ahmed attended medical school at the University of Dundee and Ninewells Teaching Hospital in Scotland, ranked as one of top three medical schools in the United Kingdom. After graduating with high honors, he moved to the United States to conduct his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Maryland; he also pursued full-time gastroenterology research in the study of liver diseases at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Ahmed completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
In addition to his education and experience in general gastroenterology and hepatology, Dr. Ahmed has been trained in therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP (procedures conducted with endoscopes – long, thin, tube-like viewing devices – developed especially for use in the stomach, intestines, bile ducts and pancreatic ducts); endoluminal stenting of gastrointestinal tumors, a less invasive alternative to surgery; and treatment of Barrett’s esophagus with HALO, an advanced therapy that destroys damaged tissue with bursts of energy from an electrode. Dr. Ahmed has published several articles and presented at various national meetings.
With his experience in a variety of treatments for disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, Dr. Ahmed also has a special interest in prevention, particularly in screening for colorectal cancer.
