What should a new client know about working with you?

A nice metaphor explains my approach. The brain can be viewed as an elephant with a rider on top. The elephant is the primitive part of our brain. The part of the brain with anger, nervousness, sex, hunger, thirst. Philosophers, religious leaders, and doctors have noted the duality of the human mind. Plato used his chariot driver and horses; the driver was the rational aspects of human behavior and the horses the more basic impulses. St Paul talked about reason and the passions and Dr Freud the conscious and unconscious. In this metaphor of the brain, the elephant most days does what it wants. This is why we struggle with diets and keeping on exercise programs because the elephant likes to do what it wants and does not like to struggle and takes the easiest path. No matter how much the rider pulls and pushes the elephant to go in a certain direction, the elephant will just march off on wherever direction it wants to go in. But there are certain things that we can do to calm the elephant down. Things that make it easier to move the elephant in one direction or the other. These things that help calm the elephant and provide the rider with different tools are call Grandma’s Rules. “Grandma’s rules” are the basics of cognitive behavioral therapy that I utilize in treating stress, anxiety and depression.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A cognitive-behavioral approach to therapy. Grandma’s rules (doing everything your grandma said to keep you healthy) helps make therapy easier. By focusing on positive self-care with a caring and concerned therapist, patients begin to make progress and feel better about themselves while at the same time get to know their therapist over the course of the first few sessions. Discussing strong emotions and difficult situations can be a bit easier once you have gotten to know your therapist, trust them a bit more, and have already begun to make some positive progress in feeling better. Look forward to talking with you In the near future.
