I went to see Dr. Balin for a full body skin exam. I had previously had a small patch of basal cell cancer and have a family history of various types of cancer. He is extremely thorough and knowledgable. He did a very thorough medical history and exam and I left with the confidence that areas of concern were identified. His exam was much more detailed that those I had with a past dermatologist. He checked out every inch of skin. Likewise, the body photography was very complete, with his medical assistant taking pictures of all parts of my body with a digital camera to be used for future reference. 50-75 pictures must have been taken and the areas to watch in the future were also identified. Four small spots were removed for biopsy and 2 more will be when I go back next week and the following week - once for a suspicious mole removal and one for a lesion biopsy. However, one needs to know up front that there will be lengthy wait times as he sees different patients during the various steps of your exam. Mine included the history, complete exam, whole body photography, and 4 biopsies. I was there from 2:45 PM to 8 PM. Knowing that in advance and planning ahead accordingly will prevent any diappointment and help with your personal time planning. That being said, spending 5 hours there is a short time in the long run if it protects me from ever having a case of melanoma from ever occuring.
