I have been working with adults and children in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for over 30 years. My efforts are aimed at overcoming painful symptoms and life situations. These include depression, anxiety, work, school and social inhibitions, unproductive patterns of behavior, and troubled relationships. I work with my patients to help them achieve a deeper emotional understanding of all the many important experiences, thoughts, and feelings from throughout their lives that make them who they are now, a whole person with strengths and problems. This emotional understanding is a powerful tool to add to their strengths to overcome their problems. Modifications of this approach (including play, art, and storytelling) also allow children to express themselves and to benefit. The psychotherapy that I offer will take time and effort from both of us. I prescribe medication as indicated for patients who are in psychotherapy with me. Parent counseling is another important part of my work.
To develop the skills to work in this way I continued my education beyond medical school, adult psychiatry training, and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship. I then attended and graduated from both the adult and child psychoanalytic programs at The Psychoanalytic Institute at NYU, now known as the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education. I currently supervise psychotherapy in the LIJ and IPE training programs.
Our first step is an initial consultation. I find out about your current problem and situation and something of your history. With this information we make a plan for going forward suited to you.
