Visited the doctor on a whim while visiting Austin so I was a bit nervous. The doctor was amazing! She listened to all my concerns and was very thorough in explaining procedures. The nurse that attended me was also amazing. Highly highly recommend.

Barbara Howard has been working with Dr. Schmitz since 2005. She started her nursing career as a registered nurse in 1975. This journey has endowed her with extensive experience in a variety of areas in the healthcare field, the most rewarding of which has been women’s health care and adolescent health. Barbara attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and completed the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) program in 1992. Upon completion, Barbara relocated to Tyler Texas and became the Maternity Coordinator of Smith County Health Department. Barbara focused on youth outreach relating to sexually transmitted infections and family planning. Barbara also had a rewarding experience with Scott & White’s “Worth the Wait Program” as a healthcare educator for adolescent sexual health concerns. This experience has moved her to towards a holistic philosophy in patient care, focusing on the overall well-being of her patients.
Barbara is active in the academic community, serving as preceptor for graduate nurse practitioners during their OBGYN rotations via local universities as well as online programs. Barbara is also active in a variety of nonprofit organizations including Susan G Komen and Outreach Health Disparity for Women. When she is not working at South Austin OBGYN, she can be found providing her care pro bono at Smithville community clinic
Barbara has continued to expand her knowledge and role as a Women’s Health Provider by completing the training certification from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Colposcopy in 2008. Barbara has also trained to provide various methods of contraception including IUD and Nexplanon® insertions.

I have a lot of trauma when it comes to doctors/medical check ups, especially as a queer women of color. I am 26 and hadn't had a pap before (yikes! I know) so I was definitely nervous before my appointment. She was the most comfortable, warm, and informed lady. I felt very safe with her. It honestly made me feel a little emotional when I left because of how effortless/accommodating the appointment was. She even gave me a list of primary care doctors and other helpful resources. This type of experience should be normal in the medical field but unfortunately it is not!

Dr. Howard was the most kind doctor. She really took her time to speak with me and helped me feel comfortable. You can tell how much she cares for her patients. For an appointment that isn’t the most fun, Dr. Howard made the best of it. I can’t recommend her enough.

Great experience with the staff and nurses. My only complaint is that there are too many text message reminders prior to the appointment. I finished all my patient registration paperwork before my appointment, yet I still had someone call me to reminded me to complete it. It was excessive.

The doctor did not sympathize with me not wanting a Pap smear. The doctor didn’t offer an alternative to a Pap smear either. She said since I had sex, what’s the problem? She never asked if the sex was consensual. She didn’t listen to me nor ask me why. She only told me what needed to be done in an unsympathetic and non-empathetic way. She’s like all the other doctors I’ve encountered. I would not recommend this doctor.
