Benedict Okwara, MD is the owner and Medical Director of First Care Medical Clinic. He is also a practicing Physician within the clinic, and has over 20 years of experience providing quality healthcare to his patients.
Dr. Okwara graduated from St. George’s University, School of Medicine in 1984 where he earned his Medical Doctorate degree. He began his career as a Physician in 1991, after completing his Residency in Internal Medicine at The Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn New York. He worked as an Emergency Room Physician in New York before relocating to North Carolina.
From his years of experience working in the Emergency Department, Dr. Okwara realized that there was a need for an outpatient facility to better serve the healthcare needs of the community. First Care Medical Clinic (FCMC) opened in 1994 in Monroe, North Carolina. The premise of FCMC was to provide excellent outpatient care in a well-equipped facility at an affordable cost for the patient.
FCMC has since grown to 7 offices with a provider team of Internists, Pediatricians, Physician Assistants, and Family Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Okwara provides leadership to the providers and staff members, and oversees the excellence of healthcare delivery provided to FCMC patients.
Dr. Okwara believes that his role as a Physician is to provide quality healthcare to patients and believes strongly in preventative medicine and patient education. He prides himself in providing patients with care that will improve both their health and their quality of life.
Dr. Okwara has a strong belief in education, and acts as a preceptor for many Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner students from various universities including Duke, Wingate, East Carolina and the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Dr. Okwara came from humble beginnings, but with a strong dedication to education and a love for the medical field, he strove to achieve his goal of becoming a Physician. His efforts have resulted in a rewarding career and the opportunity to treat patients in the community with excellent and compassionate healthcare. One of his favorite quotes is from author F. Unfortunately, this provider did not meet my expectations. When I arrived at the office, I was handed (not an exaggeration) 15 different sheets to fill out. The front office clerk was having a difficult time checking me in or figuring out my co-pay. Both, immediately dropped my confidence in the office to such a degree that I decided to leave.
Having gotten great care in other cities, I've been consistently disappointed with the Charlotte area providers on Zocdoc. Being intimately familiar with healthcare and what is possible, I understand that I'm a bit atypical and expect a higher level of care than most. It's great that this provider uses an online system, but when I arrive at the office and the 15 sheets of paper have clearly been copied and re-copied 9798 times since 1950, it's not the modernized care that I'm seeking. Quality and outcomes matter, but the perception of quality also matters.
