Daniel H. Gruenstein, MD, cares for infants, children, teens and adults with congenital heart disease – abnormalities that affect the structure and function of a patient's heart. He specializes in interventional cardiology, including intravascular stent placement, valve implantation and hybrid cardiac catheterization procedures.
Dr. Gruenstein's research focuses on innovations in cardiac device development. He serves as the primary investigator on several studies that test new devices in preclinical and FDA approved settings. In addition, Dr. Gruenstein was one of 7 clinicians nationwide invited by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Intervention to participate in the design and creation of a biodegradable stent for pediatric patients. He holds several provisional patents for his work.
A devoted educator, Dr. Gruenstein mentors medical students, residents and fellows in interventional cardiology. As one of only five instructors, Dr. Gruenstein trains approximately 20 percent of all cardiologists in the United States who use the Amplatzer Atrial Septal Occluder Device to treat atrial septal defects (holes in the wall between the upper chambers of the heart). He has directed several national hands-on workshops for adult and pediatric interventional cardiologists, teaching advanced therapeutic techniques.
Dr. Gruenstein has made significant contribution to the medical literature, publishing abstracts, peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and more on key topics in pediatric cardiology. In addition, he was a founding member and the inaugural president of the Pediatric/Congenital Interventional Cardiology Early-career Society (PICES), an international organization that promotes early faculty development and performs multi-center studies.
