More about Dr. Daniel Scott, MD

Daniel Scott, M.D. is a Professor in UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Department of Surgery and holds the Frank H. Kidd Jr., M.D., Distinguished Professorship in Surgery. He also is the department’s Vice Chair of Education and Director of its residency program. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Southern Methodist University and has had a fascination with innovation and technology since that time. A native of New Orleans, Dr. Scott earned his medical degree at Louisiana State University School of Medicine and then came to UT Southwestern to complete a residency in general surgery and a two-year fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery. While in training at UTSW, he met a medical student who is now a dermatologist with a private practice in Dallas; she’s also his wife. After serving on the faculty at Tulane University School of Medicine and establishing that school’s first center focusing on laparoscopic surgery as well as a robotic general surgery program, Dr. Scott returned to UT Southwestern, joining the faculty in 2005. He currently teaches advanced laparoscopic techniques and performs bariatric surgeries, other gastrointestinal operations, and all types of hernia repairs. Internationally recognized as a leader in laparoscopic surgery, bariatric surgery, and surgical education, Dr. Scott has lectured around the globe, served as author or editor of three books, and written some 100 articles and 35 book chapters. He is treasurer of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and Vice President of both the Association for Surgical Education Foundation and the Fellowship Council for gastrointestinal surgical fellowships. He also serves on numerous other committees of national organizations.
