I've been having some mild symptoms often associated with a couple of hormonal conditions that run in my family, so since I was overdue for an annual and pap, I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone.
Unfortunately, because I'm moderately overweight (but a regular exerciser, reasonably healthy eater, and with otherwise beautiful health stats), and because one of the symptoms I mentioned noticing was a sudden 10-lb. weight gain that occurred concurrently with other symptoms, Dr. McHugh's immediate response was, "It's probably all caused by your weight. Have you tried Weight Watchers?" Five more minutes along those lines ("Have you tried eating less? Have you tried exercise? What about Jenny Craig?") and a quick exam that felt pretty cursory and rushed, was the whole appointment. It was as if she'd already decided that because my weight is above a certain limit (keep in mind I'm a size 12 -- not skinny by any means, but not huge) that that was all that mattered and all that was worth paying attention to or talking about.
Look: I get it. Weight's important; doctors have to talk about it, and it can be as much of a cause as a symptom of hormonal issues. But rather than actually listen to my clearly and reasonably articulated symptoms in the context of my medical and family history, it just felt like I was written off as one more stereotypical lazy, fat person who doesn't care about their health.
In fairness, Dr. McHugh did seem really stressed and distracted, so maybe she was having an off day. And the other reviews here describe a really warm, attentive provider. Unfortunately, that wasn't what I experienced, and I don't have any reason to believe I'll experience otherwise unless I lose 30 lbs before my next appointment, so I'll probably have to try my luck with a different gyno in another year or two. :/
