More about Dr. Douglas LaBier, PhD
Douglas LaBier, Ph.D., is a business psychologist, psychoanalytic psychotherapist and a writer. He has a long-standing interest in the psychology of the career culture, life challenges in our interconnected world, and the interplay between work and mental health – which he first wrote about in his book, Modern Madness.
As a business psychologist, he consults to senior executives, leaders and career professionals on ways to create greater alignment between personal development and a positive leadership/management culture. As a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, he treats men and women, individuals and couples, with a particular focus on adult/midlife developmental issues within our rapidly changing culture and society.
The focus of his work and writing is to identify and support psychologically healthy individuals and society, within today’s evolving, unpredictable world. It grew from his work that led to his highly acclaimed book, Modern Madness. A pioneering examination of how work and career within organizations affect emotional and values conflict, it was cited by Daniel Goleman in The New York Times as “…In the vanguard…offering sobering insights into the costs of modern success.” it explained why personal and career-related conflicts are often caused, paradoxically, by successful adaptation to the roles, pressures, and culture within organizations and careers.
Dr. LaBier is the author of over 100 articles and book chapters on career conflicts, intimate relationships and life development issues. His articles have appeared in professional journals and the popular press, including the Washington Post, The Huffington Post, Psychology Today and others.
His views about creating psychologically healthy people and society are the subject of frequent coverage by national print and broadcast media. He’s been a guest on such TV and radio shows as the Today show, NBC Nightly News, ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, FOX; NPR, PBS and others. He’s been interviewed and quoted in features appearing in The Washington Post, The New York Times, Forbes, Fortune, and others.
Dr. LaBier is also Clinical Professor at The George Washington University; Director of the Center for Progressive Development; and has served on the faculty of the Washington School of Psychiatry and the National Institute of Mental Health.
He’s lived in Washington, DC for decades but still loves the Hudson Valley and New England.
