More about Dr. Franklin Li, MD
Franklin T. Li, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist, eye surgeon, and Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has particular expertise in femtosecond laser cataract surgery using the most advanced intraocular lenses. He also performs oculoplastic surgery for correction of eyelid abnormalities and provides treatment for a wide range of general ophthalmic conditions including trauma, glaucoma, eye infections, dry eye, and retinal disease.
Dr. Li and his family have happily lived in the Triangle area since 2008. He was born in Houston, Texas but later went to Los Angeles to receive his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California. There, he received the Trustee full-tuition scholarship and graduated from the Thematic Option Honors program magna cum laude in 2000 with a B.A. in Biological Sciences and minor in Psychology.
Dr. Li received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston where he also pursued research in inherited corneal dystrophies. He has presented his findings at international meetings such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Dr. Li’s training continued with a one-year medical internship at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois. His ophthalmology residency was completed at the prestigious University of California San Diego Shiley Eye Institute. Here his research focused on the reliability of novel imaging machines used in the diagnosis of glaucoma. At graduation, he received the Outstanding Teacher award for his enthusiasm in educating and instructing medical students. Dr. Li also spent time traveling to Tijuana, Mexico to provide aid and perform eye surgery for children in undeserved communities.
