Dr Mikiel was born and raised in the Carribean, she originally came to America to attend University, however became disenchanted with the world of business as her chosen career. This prompted some deep soul searching which resulted in her leaving school and exploring the outer world. During this time she met and married her husband and had 3 children who are her pride and joy. She returned to school with the thought that she would pursue a degree in Psychology and in fact earned her MA in Counseling Psychology. During her tenure as a counselor for the Upward Bound Program, she realized that she had so much more to give beyond counseling, so she decided to attend Medical School. She moved to Texas 4 years ago and in the last year has started her own practice where she focuses on family medicine, and has an intense interest in Obesity Medicine. She uses the tools that she acquired on her psychology training to help her patients improve their relationship with food. She says that she loves the opportunity to get to know her patients, and it is a good day when she has made a patient laugh, or their health has improved to the point that they can be weaned from medication.
In her private life she is a widow of many years, and a mother of 3 grown children. In her free time she enjoys sampling ethnic foods, reading, music, good wine and exploring the unknown. Her friends say that she always has a listening ear, and generally knows the right thing to say to them when needed.
Dr. Mikiel has recently undertaken the study of functional medicine as she says that it actually goes to the root of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms.
