I grew up in a family and community that valued a healthy life style. I chose to become a family physician because I felt it provided the best opportunity to promote the health of my patients. After completing a Family Medicine Residency, I completed a Preventive Medicine Residency which furthered my understanding of prevention, population-based health care, and health care delivery systems. During that residency I was also a Robert Woods Johnson Clinical Scholar – a fellowship that trains “change agents” in health care innovation. After my training, I was privileged to assist the team that piloted the Washington State Basic Health Care Plan. This innovative health-insurance program served as a model for part of the Affordable Health Care Act.
I then joined the US Public Health Service. My first job monitored research grants on health care quality and effectiveness for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in Washington DC . I then transferred to Albuquerque, New Mexico to serve as the Epidemiologist of the Indian Health Service Diabetes Program where I supervised quality assessment and diabetes care improvement for Native Americans and Alaska Natives across the United States.
I have continued my interest in improving diabetes care. I have held faculty positions with the University of Washington, Georgetown University, University of New Mexico and Indiana University. I have published and lectured on diabetes at national meetings. I served as the Chair of the Professional Council on Foot Care of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for two years and I authored the ADA technical review of preventive diabetic foot care. In the last decade, I’ve shifted my efforts to working with people at high risk for diabetes.
