More about Dr. John Gililland, MD, FACOG

Dr. John L. Gililland is the newest fertility specialist at Reproductive Care Center and is a board certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist with 26 years of experience in helping infertile couples. He will see patients at our new Utah Valley Fertility Clinic located in Pleasant Grove, UT. Dr. Gililland grew up in Arizona where his father was a very well-known and respected family physician. After achieving a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry at Arizona State University, Dr. Gililland went to medical school at the University of Arizona in Tucson. His residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology was completed at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. He joined the US Army Medical Corps just before finishing his training. The following three years were spent in Frankfurt, West Germany caring for OB/GYN patients. In 1989, he was accepted for a fellowship at the Combined Federal Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the National Naval Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). During his time in Washington, D.C., Dr. Gililland completed a ground breaking research project for which he was awarded the top prize Founders Award at the annual meeting of the Armed Forces District. Subsequently, he was awarded the prestigious Purdue Frederic Award by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. After his fellowship, Dr. Gililland was transferred to Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, where he was appointed Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. During his time at Tripler, Dr. Gililland was in charge of the department’s research activities and the supervision and training of 24 OB/GYN residents. At the end of that tour of duty, Dr. Gilliland was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. In 1993, Dr. Gililland left the military for private practice in Sacramento, California, working at Pacific Fertility Center (PFC). He treated patients with a wide variety of reproductive difficulties with services including IVF, IUI, and surgery. In 1997, he left PFC to join an IVF practice in Rocklin, California, Northern California Fertility Medical Center (NCFMC) where he served as medical director. He was very well known and respected by physicians and patients in that community, was an innovator of many advances in patient treatment, and consistently had one of the highest IVF pregnancy success rates in the region during his 12 years at NCFMC. Dating back to 1994, Dr. Gililland and his wife, Carol, have been very active participating in mission outreaches with their church. These activities have included trips to Mexico, Uganda, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Mali. After seeing the tremendous need for medical care in West Africa, Dr. Gililland and his wife decided to leave their life (and practice) in northern California to serve full time in Mali. The year 2010 was spent in language school in France. During the following four years, they served at Hôpital Femmes et Enfants in Koutiala, Mali. Dr. Gililland was the Director of Women’s Services at the hospital and cared for patients with all manner of gynecologic pathology (e.g. fibroids, ovarian tumors, cancer), and for pregnant patients with every obstetrical problem and complication imaginable. In his practice in Africa, he also consulted with and treated a multitude of couples with infertility, not only from the local area, but also from many surrounding countries. During the fall of 2014, Dr. Gililland (Dr. G) and his wife of 40 years (yes, they were very young when they were married) decided to return to the US. They have 3 sons and 3 grandchildren and elected to return because of their desire to be closer to their family. Dr. G’s son, Jeremy, is an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Utah and inherited his father’s love for patient care. Dr. G’s and Carol’s love of family is surpassed only by their love for God and the satisfaction they get from serving Him.
