More about Jonah Soolman, RD

- Registered Dietitian - Commonwealth of Massachusetts Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist - American College of Sports Medicine Health Fitness Specialist - National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Trainer At 20 years old, my definition of exquisite nutrition was including a small bowl of iceberg lettuce with my dinner. As co-captain of my Tufts University tennis team and with three Boston Marathons already behind me, I was active enough to more than make up for eating whatever I wanted, right? Shortly thereafter, a doctor discovered a tumor on my spine. During my post-surgery recovery, I began to consider what I could do to take better care of myself. I spent my free time reading nutrition and exercise physiology books, and ultimately I departed my research analyst position with the U.S. Department of Transportation in order to reenter academia at the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a focus on nutrition. While in school, I earned multiple personal fitness trainer certifications and coached clients at a couple of local gyms. My clients included previously sedentary individuals who were just starting out, advanced high school and adult athletes who wanted to gain an edge on their competition, endurance athletes preparing for demanding events, and people who simply wanted to take better care of themselves for health reasons. As a Registered Dietitian, I help individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and medical conditions reach their goals. My patients span nearly the entire life cycle, all the way from preteens to nonagenarians. They come seeking guidance for a variety of nutrition-related issues including, but not limited to, weight concerns, food allergies, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypoglycemia, and athletic performance. Earlier in my nutrition career, I counseled at a multidisciplinary medical clinic where I worked closely with other practitioners, including doctors, nurses, chiropractors, and acupuncturists. Because I recognize the value of working collaboratively with other medical professionals to build and execute treatment plans, I continue to take this approach by staying in contact with the doctors, therapists, trainers, etc. who work with my clients. I have also worked as a consultant for the Tufts University Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy on various research projects for a number of years. My research roots remind me of the difference between hypotheses and conclusions, and they enable me to better understand dense journal articles, nutrition spots on television, and everything in between. When I am not working, I enjoy making physical activity part of my daily life. In addition to time spent playing NCAA tennis, my proudest athletic achievements include riding my bicycle from Seattle to Boston for charity, finishing the Boston Marathon 14 months after undergoing back surgery, and running up Mount Washington on three separate occasions. I also enjoy trying new restaurants, watching Man vs. Food, and experimenting with my own cookie recipes (with varying degrees of success), all evidence that eating healthily and enjoying food are not mutually exclusive, and that the latter does not require that one limit nutritious food to a daily bowl of lettuce.
