What made you want to become a health care provider or what is your earliest memory of wanting to be one?
As far back as I could remember, I was always giving "injections" to family members with my Fisher-Price doctor's kit. Coming from a family of Osteopathic Physicians (DO's), I was very interested in structure and function and how this interaction is involved in health. As an undergraduate, I majored in biology and psychology, exploring the interface of mind-body medicine. During my senior year, I wrote my senior monograph on pain, endorphins and emotions. I made neuroscience my choice as it intrigued me.
What do you love most about your specialty? / Why did you choose your specialty?
Neurology involves phenomenology- what do we, as neurologists, observe- and from these observations, we come to a sound differential diagnosis. Given my interest in mind-body medicine, I turned my focus to neuromuscular disorders and the neurophysiological changes seen in their care. I have included medical acupuncture and osteopathic manipulative medicine in my practice. Managing cases with athletes involving Sports Neurology & Concussion are always a challenge.
How do you connect with your patients?
For me, connecting with my patients is by being present with them. "Be here, now" is the most important way a physician can strengthen that connection. Active listening goes a long way. By doing this, I seek to develop a partnership with my patients for their best benefits and outcomes.
What are your interests outside of the office (hobbies, activities)?
Spending time with my family. Dining, whether at a BBQ or a fine restaurant, draws us all closer. I am an avid martial artist and enjoy watching UFC events, and MMA in general, with my 3 sons. Certified in Pilates, I maintain workouts to remain as fit as I can.
