A native Texan, Dr. Schanzer and family moved to Memphis to open Southern Eye Associates in 1990 where she continues to be the anchor surgeon and Medical Director. Dr. Schanzer is an eye surgeon in high demand, annually performing thousands of cataract and LASIK procedures. She is always on the leading edge of technology, including stitchless & dropless laser cataract surgery and bladeless LASIK.
She received her Medical Degree with honors from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and completed her Residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine, also in Houston.
Dr. Schanzer is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, American College of Surgeons, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and International Society of Refractive Surgery.
She is a member of both medical and ophthalmology components of the Shelby County and American Medical Associations and serves on the board of the Memphis Eye Society.
Dr. Schanzer has a deep passion for high quality surgical eye care and a tender heart for the poor and needy of the world. She has been traveling to Africa on medical mission trips since 1988.
In 2006 Dr. Schanzer established Southern Eye Clinic of Serabu in Sierra Leone, West Africa where she performs hundreds of surgeries and treats thousands of patients every year.
In October 2011, Dr. Schanzer received a Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for her missionary work in Sierra Leone. In addition, she also received a Humanitarian Award in April 2012 from her Alma Mater, the Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Schanzer works in consultation with her associate, Dr. Sean Aldinger, who performs the initial evaluation for all LASIK patients.
