Matthew B. Kern, M.D. F.A.A.N.S., is a board certified neurosurgeon who has been in practice for 14 years. He is skilled in general neurosurgery and specializes in complex spinal procedures, the surgical treatment of brain tumors, as well as the treatment of traumatic injuries to the brain, spine and spinal cord.
Dr. Kern has special expertise in minimally invasive procedures and artificial cervical and lumbar disk arthroplasty. He also performs dorsal column stimulation and peripheral nerve surgery such as carpal and cubital tunnel releases.
Dr. Kern received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, and his medical degree from the New Jersey Medical College, Newark, NJ. He then did a surgical internship and one year of general surgery residency at NJ Medical College. After a year of research fellowship he performed two years of neurosurgical residency in NJ before moving to Albuquerque, NM, where he completed two years of neurosurgical residency and one year as the chief resident in neurological surgery.
Dr. Kern has been in private practice in Evansville, IN since 1997. He was instrumental in helping St. Mary’s Medical Center obtain a level II trauma status seven years ago and has served as the chief of adult/pediatric neurosurgery since.
Dr. Kern spent 18 years in the U.S Army Reserve rising to the rank of Lt. Col., and did two overseas deployments since 2003.
Dr. Kern has written articles on brain and spine trauma, including surgical treatments for significant spinal instability and the surgical treatment of traumatic syringomyelia.
He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS).
