Qualifications and Experience
Hi, I’m Dr Matt Pabis. I’m a board certified family medicine doctor trained in upstate New York where I learned how to do a lot on my own, and now I’m practicing back home in the city where I handle as much as I can in the office without sending you all over the city for needless referrals. I was raised in New York City. I completed my residency in Schenectady NY. I started off working for a big corporate medical practice in Harlem, but found that it did not give me the time to really know my patients. It felt like an assembly line; 15 minutes to see one problem and move on. I didn’t want to practice medicine like that. I wanted to get to know my patients, and really understand them to make their lives and health better. Then the opportunity to start a primary care practice in a pain management, orthopedic, and cosmetic practice presented itself and I jumped on it. I loved my time there, but it still did not feel quite like home. Even though there was a lot to learn and do, the variety of patients wasn’t there. So I decided to move on and start my own primary care practice. I also took the position of a medical director of a psychiatric, and substance abuse clinic in the same building where my office is located. I developed a practice where I work with my patients to help them be as healthy as they can be. I don’t push one medicine or another, I am always open to new ideas or new treatment plans, and every treatment plan is developed with you. If option 1 or option 2 don’t work for you, we can figure an option that does work. Additionally I’m comfortable with opioid addiction therapy, medical cannabinoids, preventive HIV medication, and Vivitrol Injections. And in some occasions, I can do house calls.
Verified Patient Reviews
My (excellent) opinion about Dr. Pabis is not based on one appointment and I consider myself very lucky to be able to be in care of Dr. Pabis for almost a year. I consider Dr. Pabis to be a truly amazing physician - professional, knowledgable, caring [the list goes on ..] ... He is never in rush to see his next patient and I always feel receiving 100% of his attention during my appointments and I feel comfortable to make all necessary to me inquiries. Dr. Pabis does not focus on 'one line of care', but, when appropriate/possible, suggests alternative ways of treatment, even if it means being referred to another specialist. I certainly appreciate being one of his patients ... hopefully, for years to come.
Living in NY, you get used to Doctors wanting to spend the least amount of time to get as many patients through the door. Dr Pabis does not fall into that category. He ensures you leave with all questions/concerns addressed. Knowledgeable Doctor with a great attitude!
I think it's vital that you have a Doctor you can trust and be open with. This was my first appointment with Dr Pabis and his bedside manner was exemplary. He took the time to get to know me rather than the normal "what are you here for" question. For me, it's not always easy to open up to a Doctor but I felt totally comfortable talking to him about my issues. I feel happy that I now have a Doctor that I can be open with and we can both ensure my health & wellbeing. Highly recommended!
Dr Matthew Pabis is amazing. He spent a lot of time with me (much more than all the previous family doctors I have ever visited), asked a lot of questions and examined me very thoroughly. He really cares about his patients and I strongly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a great family doctor in NYC.
Excellent patient review skills
A real find, Dr. Pabis is knowledgeable, worldly, and warm. He creates a dialogue with the patient: no presumption of dumbing down on his end. I went seeking pain management and am now pretty sure I will make him my primary as well. (Okay--he does laugh laugh at my one-liners.) He spent his earliest years in Poland, and there is something delightfully European about his knowledge bank and sense of humor.
I have had quite an experience for the past few months trying to find a good doctor that cares and isn't dismissive about my concerns. I finally found one who is a great listener and was also able to diagnose my issue shortly after an exam. He's friendly, knowledgable and is going to be my primary care physician from now on.
