Dr. Barnes received his medical degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1989. He completed both his internship and residency in general surgery from Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, from 1989 to 1991. He was the senior resident in urologic surgery at Duke University Medical Center from 1991 to 1994, during which time he won the Jack McGovern Award for Excellence in Urologic Surgery in 1993. He served as chief resident in urologic surgery from 1994 to 1995.
Dr. Barnes was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the US Army in 1985, where he served as a Major in both the Medical Corps and the Combat Support Command before leaving active duty.
