He is confident (and accurate) in his diagnosis, works effectively with my other doctors, and demonstrates professional excellence at every turn. Dr. Oren Messeri is a psychiatrist with a wide range of interests and expertise. After completing residency in Psychiatry at The Payne Whitney Clinic, Weill Cornell Medical Center, he did a one year fellowship in emergency psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Messeri stayed on and eventually served as the assistant director of the comprehensive psychiatric emergency program. He simultaneously opened a private practice in general psychiatry on the upper west side of Manhattan. Dr. Messeri’s interest in the human condition, the nature of suffering and how emotional distress can be alleviated has led him to explore multiple approaches and treatment modalities. He completed a year long intensive psychotherapy program at the William Alanson White Institute in 2008 and enrolled the following year at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research where he is an advanced candidate scheduled to complete the program in June, 2016.
In addition, Dr. Messeri has studied mindfulness meditation and various forms of yoga breath work. He is currently working on a program to introduce psychiatry residents to core concepts in basic wellness so that they are better able to care for themselves and their patients. Dr. Messeri has a flexible approach in his work with patients in his private practice and offers a wide range of options after completing a thorough psychiatric evaluation.
Dr. Messeri is particularly interested in psychological trauma and the various ways that traumatic events impact individuals, families and societies. He has explored how the intergenerational transmission of trauma tends to manifest and can help you to understand this complicated phenomenon and to eventually find relief.
