With an enthusiastic embrace of wellness and disease prevention, Dr. Rogena Johnson is a family practice physician with overseas experience and a strong public health perspective. She earned her MD and completed her residency at University of Kansas, where she gained experience with critical procedures like colposcopy, and endometrial biopsy. During her residency, she also strengthened her language skills with courses in medical Spanish. Dr. Johnson’s past teaching roles include resident supervisor of an inpatient care team, and preceptor for students throughout their first two years in medical school. Dr. Johnson has a strong background in research, including her study in 2008 to improve rates of HPV vaccination and public health in her community. She has also researched ways to identify patients at risk for osteoporosis.
In 2005, Dr. Johnson completed a clerkship in general surgery in Zanzibar, Tanzania – an experience which was pivotal in her decision to become a family physician. Dr. Johnson has since remained involved with her professional community, and has delivered presentations like “Lead Toxicity in an Adult Patient” at the University of Kansas Hospital Hematology Grand Rounds. Her publications include a chapter on anemia for “Signs and Symptoms in Family Medicine,” an Elsevier textbook for medical students. Her many awards for her compassion and devotion include G.O. Proud Student Research Fellowship Award for Otolaryngology research from the University of Kansas. She is no stranger to public health either, and she has been serving as a volunteer at JayDoc Free Health Clinic for the past nine years. Dr. Johnson holds two clinic staff physician roles, and an ER Staff Physician role at Acute Care Inc. She is certified to perform Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
