“Thank you so much to my new MD! She is a dream come true. She was empathetic, kind, knowledgable, QUICK and personable. I am very thankful to her providing psycho-education throughout the procedure. This provided emotional and physical safety because I was able to know exactly what was going to happen, when it was going to happen and why it was going to happen. This was a major difference from a previous provider who abused their position to conduct wrongful behavior in the confines of the treatment room. I am also appreciative to Ms. Alicia, the NP, who was likewise kind and present during the procedure. She was exceptionally patient before and after and explained the modern data privacy standards for lab reporting. I cried after the procedure because I was so happy to know I was not harmed and would not be harmed by this MD. I searched for POC MD for years, I am very happy to be her client .Ty again MD. Ty for going to med school. Ty for providing excellent, ethical medical tmt. TYSM”

Ruqayyah Abdul-Karim, MD, specializes in obstetrics and gynecology at Lenox Hill Hospital, and is also an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. In addition to OB/GYN services, she also provides minimally invasive gynecological surgeries and is credentialed for the da Vinci robotic surgical system.
“As a child, I was always drawn to science, and studied anthropology in college,” she says. After switching to medicine, she did an obstetrics rotation while attending George Washington University School of Medicine, and fell in love with the specialty.
After graduation, Dr. Abdul-Karim did her residency at Maimonides Medical Center, then joined Northwell Health in August 2021. In terms of her approach to care, she hopes patients come away feeling like their issues have been addressed and that they’re receiving comprehensive, compassionate, non-judgmental, supportive care.
“My patients have taught me never to make assumptions, because everyone has their own story and their own perspectives,” says Dr. Abdul-Karim. “I’m open to whatever might come up in a visit, even if it’s just an annual checkup.”
She chose Northwell because she appreciated the network of resources throughout the organization, not just at Lenox Hill. She feels her patients can get comprehensive care no matter what issues they might be facing, and she believes the collaborative environment at Northwell creates a patient-centric approach.

The exam room didn’t seem to be cleaned well before I was shown in. The doctor’s bedside manner was not great. I had blood drawn and had massive bruising for days. I will be looking for a different provider, unfortunately.

Dr. Abdul-Karim’s energy and bedside manner was amazing, during a usually vulnerable and uncomfortable type of appointment she was friendly and familiar and conducted the exam quickly and thoroughly while keeping me engaged and laughing. Highly, highly recommend - there’s a wait for an appointment and you’ll wait in the waiting room, but it’s 100% worth it to feel safe and comfortable!

The appointment went smoothly, and the office staff was very communicative, positive, and friendly. However, I did feel that the doctor’s bedside manner could use improvement. I did not leave feeling heard by her, and felt that I was more of an annoyance.
