More about Dr. Salomon Melgen, MD

A renowned Vitreo-Retina specialist, Hispanic-American Ophthalmologist, Dr. Salomon Melgen, specializes in treating patients with Diabetic Retinopathy, Age Related Macular Degeneration, and Detached and Torn Retinas, among many other eye-related diseases. Dr. Melgen is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and Founding Director of the Melgen Retina Eye Center, specializing in disease and surgery of the vitreous and retina, located in South Florida. Upon completing his training at Harvard University in 1986, he quickly began establishing himself as an innovator by becoming the first surgeon to perform outpatient retina surgery in South Florida in 1986 and by pioneering laser therapy. When nothing was being offered to treat patients suffering from these diseases, Dr. Melgen was already aggressively treating his patients with laser treatments that later became the standard of care, but were rejected years ago. In 1988 Dr. Melgen founded the Melgen Retina Eye Center. From its inception, the Center became affiliated with Harvard Medical School’s Schepens Eye Research Institute (the largest independent eye research institute in the nation) and together they conducted successful research leading to the use of the Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope (SLO), which became the basis of the development of instruments that are currently utilized today to diagnose and treat retina-related diseases.
