Dr. Barkatullah completed his undergraduate training at the University of Chicago. He earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College and went on to complete an Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology and Nutrition fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Barkatullah is board certified in both Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. He is an active member of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).
Throughout his training, Dr. Barkatullah was engaged in clinical research involving common gastrointestinal conditions. His work has been published in clinical journals, and his research has been presented at national academic gastroenterology conferences. Dr. Barkatullah strives to incorporate the most up-to-date scientific knowledge into his patient care the care of his patients.
Dr. Barkatullah's clinical interests include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

This is not my first visit to Dr. Barkatullah...I return because I love how he is as a doctor! He's thorough, and takes his time with you. He explains everything really well. He answers any questions you have, and doesn't make you feel foolish asking them. In my case, he's been conservative in his approach, but willing to pursue other paths when I didn't respond to the treatment we tried first. And he's super easy to talk to and has a great bedside manner. LOVE this doctor!

Excellent bedside manner, does not rush you. I don't generally like going to the doctor, but I would not be afraid to see Dr. Barkatullah. He is very nice and knowledgeable. I would highly HIGHLY recommend him to anyone and everyone that has GI needs. He listened to all my questions and did not make me feel that my concerns were stupid. Wonderful physician, I wish I had found him sooner!

I like Dr. Barkatullah a lot. He spends plenty of time with me, and makes sure all my questions are answered. He explains everything thoroughly.
His office is a little over-aggressive with the reminder calls, which I find off-putting. They leave messages threatening to cancel your appointment and charge you a cancellation fee if you fail to call back to confirm.
Otherwise, they are friendly, helpful, and efficient, though, so it's not the staff I have a problem with, it's the policy, or the script.
Overall, very happy with Dr Barkatullah and the office staff.

This was my first visit to Dr. Barkatullah and I went to him because of all of the positive reviews on the Internet. I agree with everything that has been said. He took time to listen to all of my concerns and explained what he wanted to do to further find out what's wrong and thoroughly explained what each test would do. He also gave me some ideas of things I could do to help my problem. I give him my highest recommendation regarding a first visit.

Love how he takes the time to really make sure you understand what's going on! He explains everything and makes sure he's answered your questions, as best he can, before you leave the office. His office staff is also really wonderful.
I am fairly anti-pill, I always like to exhaust every holistic route possible before turning to scripts, and he is supportive of that---that in and of itself is amazing!
He truly is a wonderful doctor!

I like the doctor very much, but his hospital affiliation is the problem!
Even though I don't plan to be admitted, tests need to be done! The hospital had major problems in the scheduling department. When you have problems scheduling tests, you start to worry what other problems you may have!

I had to wait a little bit, but they kept me informed that I was next and it shouldn't be much longer and after seeing how thorough he was I didn't mind that I had to wait a little while because I know he's giving all his patients the attention and care they should have.
